Man Tells Police He Was Swimming, Singing in Mall Fountain

The following is an excerpt from the Salem Police Department's log: 

Tuesday, Aug. 6

  • At 4:24 p.m., a hypodermic needle was discovered on Marlborough Road.
  • At 4:28 p.m., police responded to a report of an elderly man with a cane yelling at people near the intersection of Essex Street and Salem Green. Police reportedly found a soaking wet elderly man walking down the street and stopped him. The man told police he "had been swimming and singing in the fountain at the mall while tourists photographed and videotaped him." Due to his level of intoxication, the man was placed into protective custody.
  • At 4:28 p.m., police responded to a report of kids swimming in the fountain at the mall.
  • At 4:32 p.m., police responded to a report of kids breaking bottles on Memorial Drive.
  • At 5:32 p.m., a man on Highland Avenue called police to report that he had a package stolen at his business.
  • At 5:41 p.m., police responded to a dispute on Nursery Street. Ian M. Monroe-Belcher, 18, of 23 Nursery St., Salem, was arrested on charges of assault and threatening to commit a crime.
  • At 7:53 p.m., a High Street Court man called police to report damage to a fence.
  • At 8:28 p.m., police responded to a loud party on Palmer Street.
  • At 9:01 p.m., police responded to a reported dog bite on English Street. A woman was reportedly taken to the hospital and the animal control officer was notified.
  • At 9:49 p.m., police assisted a man whose motorized scooter died near the intersection of Fort and Columbus avenues.
  • At 11:03 p.m., police responded to a report of suspicious activity on Oakland Street.

Wednesday, Aug. 7


  • At 12:10 a.m., police responded to a domestic dispute on Pope Street.
  • At 2:14 a.m., police responded to a report of a loud party on Dead Horse Beach.
  • At 12:09 p.m., police responded to a domestic dispute on Bridge Street. Hector L. Mora, 44, of 240 Anchor Inn, North Quincy, was arrested on a charge of violating an abuse prevention oder.
  • At 12:16 p.m., a hypodermic needle was discovered on Bridge Street.
Other Arrest:

Corey J. Chadbourne, 19, of 23 Nursery St., Salem, was arrested for reportedly having an outstanding warrant.
