Vehicle Burglarized on Mason Street

The following is an excerpt from the Salem Police Department's log: 


Monday, Aug. 19


  • At 4:03 p.m., a Loring Hills Avenue resident called police to report that a gold chain and a wedding ring had been stolen.
  • At 4:16 p.m., a Barnes Avenue resident called police to report that their water was yellow. The DPW was notified and it appears to be an ongoing problem in the area. 
  • At 5:32 p.m., a Forrester Street woman called police to report that her son's bicycle was stolen out of their backyard.
  • At 5:39 p.m., police responded to a domestic dispute on Harrison Avenue. Michelle A. Cote, 40, of 5 Harrison Ave., Salem, was arrested on a charge of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon (frying pan). Kenneth Devaney, 36, of 5 Harrison Ave., Salem, was arrested for reportedly having two outstanding warrants.
  • At 5:57 p.m., police responded to a shoplifting incident at the TJ Maxx on Traders Way. Holly M. Szczechowicz, 21, of 344 Essex St., Salem, was arrested on a charge of shoplifting merchandise by concealment.
  • At 6:29 p.m., police responded to a report of two boys fighting on Congress Street.
  • At 7:06 p.m., a woman entered the police station to report that her purse was stolen out of her unlocked vehicle while it was parked on Bayview Avenue.
  • At 7:50 p.m., police responded to a domestic dispute on Wisteria Street.
  • At 10:24 p.m., police responded to a report of suspicious activity on Summit Avenue.

Tuesday, Aug. 20

  • At 5:45 a.m., police responded to a vehicle break-in on Mason Street. A man told police someone smashed the passenger-side window of his car overnight and stole his wallet.
  • At 7:59 a.m., police responded to a report of a trail of blood on the sidewalk near the intersection of Wharf and Derby streets.
  • At 10:45 a.m., a man known to have an outstanding warrant was located on Dow Street. Reggie Kendrick, 94, of 12 Dow St., Salem, was arrested for reportedly having an outstanding warrant.
  • At 11:37 a.m., police stopped a motor vehicle near the intersection of North and School streets.
  • At 11:57 a.m., police responded to a report of suspicious activity on Naumkeag Street.
  • At 12:10 p.m., police responded to a report of a man taking pictures of houses on Cross Street.
  • At 1:11 p.m., police responded to a report of "kids abusing fish by stepping on them" near the intersection of Lafayette Street and Rosedale Avenue. Responding officers didn't find any kids or fish in the area.
  • At 1:23 p.m., police responded to a report of illegal dumping on Memorial Drive. A man called the fire department to report that two men in a pickup truck dumped a bucket filled with feces on the side of the road near Camp Naumkeag. The DPW was called to the scene to dispose of the bucket. 
  • At 2:01 p.m., police located a man known to have an outstanding warrant on Lafayette Street. Richard D. Simpson, 26, of the streets of Salem, was arrested on two counts of illegally possessing a class E substance and for reportedly having an outstanding warrant.
  • At 2:26 p.m., police responded to a report of people fishing on Orne Street.
  • At 2:48 p.m., police responded to a dispute on Swampscott Road.
  • At 4:00 p.m., police responded to a road rage incident on Whalers Lane.
  • At 4:01 p.m., police responded to a report of a man urinating on Dodge Street.
  • At 4:05 p.m., a vehicle was reported stolen on Canal Street.
Other arrest:

William L. Gates Jr., 37, of 32 Hart St., Beverly Farms, was arrested on charges of operating a motor vehicle with a revoked license, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and for reportedly having two outstanding warrants.
