Manhole Cover Explosion Reported on Lafayette Street

The following is an excerpt from the Salem Police Department's log:

Tuesday, May 6:

  • At 4:30 p.m., police responded to a domestic dispute on Harbor Street.
  • At 5:42 p.m., police stopped a motor vehicle on Highland Avenue. Gener Nolasco, 20, of 48 Burrill St., Lynn, was arrested on charges of operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license and providing a false name to a police officer.
  • At 5:46 p.m., police made an arrest on Boston Street. James E. Marraffa, 35, of 24 Fowler St., Salem, was arrested for reportedly having an outstanding warrant.
  • At 7:00 p.m., police stopped a motor vehicle on Fort Avenue. Camila S. Freitas, 24, of 88 Bomona St., Revere, was arrested on a charge of unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle.
  • At 7:30 p.m., police conducted a well-being check on Grove Street.
  • At 8:28 p.m., police conducted a well-being check on Highland Avenue.
  • At 9:47 p.m., police responded to a fireworks complaint near the intersection of Valley Street and Cherry Hill Avenue.

Wednesday, May 7:

  • At 1:08 a.m., police responded to a noise complaint on Lafayette Street.
  • At 6:58 a.m., police responded to an unattended bag on Leach Street.
  • At 11:51 a.m., the security supervisor at the Footprint Power Station on Fort Avenue called police to report a man trespassing on their property. Clifford Toussaint, 43, of 56 River St., Beverly, was arrested on a charge of trespassing.
  • At 12:47 p.m., police conducted a well-being check on Mason Street.
  • At 1:23 p.m., police responded to a report of homeless people living under the Congress Street bridge.
  • At 1:31 p.m., police responded to a shoplifting incident at the Market Basket on Highland Avenue. William S. Devaux, 35, of 33 Irving Road, Natick, was arrested on a charge of larceny over $250.
  • At 2:31 p.m., police responded to an assault and battery near the intersection of Congress and Harbor streets.
  • At 3:25 p.m., police stopped a motor vehicle on Lafayette Street. Kirk D. Wonson, 44, of 120 Washington St., Gloucester, was arrested on a charge of illegally possessing a class B substance (Suboxone).
  • At 4:34 p.m., police responded to a reported manhole explosion on Lafayette Street.
