Salem Man Charged With Possessing Sawed-Off Shotgun

The following is an excerpt from the Salem Police Department's log: 

Tuesday, Sept. 3

  • At 5:19 p.m., police responded to a dispute at the intersection of Derby Street and Fort Avenue. Ralph E. Sciarretta, 44, of the streets of Salem, was arrested on a charge of possessing a large knife.
  • At 5:51 p.m., police responded to a report of a man passed out on the sidewalk on Bridge Street.
  • At 7:51 p.m., police responded to a report of a man sleeping on a bench on March Street. The man was moved along.
  • At 8:11 p.m., police responded to a shoplifting incident at Walyo's Convenience Store on Essex Street. Police are reviewing the store's surveillance video in an attempt to identify a teen that fled the store with an energy drink without paying for it. 
  • At 8:58 p.m., police responded to a domestic assault and battery on Langdon Street.
  • At 9:29 p.m., police responded to a domestic assault and battery on Carlton Street. Lauren E. Vowells, 24, of 12 Carlton St., Salem, was arrested on charges of assault and battery and malicious destruction of property valued above $250.
  • At 9:39 p.m., a Walter Street woman called police to report that she had just found a sawed-off shotgun wrapped in a dog blanket. After a brief investigation, a warrant was issued for Brock A. Fleming, 19, of 33 Walter St., Salem, on a charge of possessing a sawed-off shotgun.
  • At 11:23 p.m., police responded to a report of suspicious activity in the Walgreen's parking lot on Boston Street. A small amount of marijuana was seized and a group of people were sent on their way.
  • At 11:25 p.m., police responded to a report of trespassing at Bertram Field. Timothy G. Wells, 24, of 5 Curtis Road, Woburn, was arrested on charges of trespassing and possessing a large knife. Wells was reportedly caught jumping the fence to the field. 


Wednesday, Sept. 4

  • At 12:24 a.m., police responded to a fireworks complaint on Grove Street.
  • At 12:36 a.m., police responded to a loud college party on Roslyn Street.
  • At 1:48 a.m., police responded to a loud party on Roslyn Street. 
  • At 3:30 a.m., police responded to a report of a woman sleeping in her vehicle on Congress Street. The woman was found to be highly intoxicated and was placed into protective custody.
  • At 6:18 a.m., police responded to a report of an injured dog near the intersection of Essex Street and Hawthorne Boulevard. Using dog biscuits, officers were able to get the dog into the back of a police cruiser and it was transported back to the station for safe keeping. The city's Animal Control Officer was notified.
  • At 8:20 a.m., police responded to a domestic dispute on School Street. Joseph W. Duffy, 45, of 68 School St., Salem, was arrested on charges of domestic assault and malicious destruction of property valued above $250.
  • At 9:18 a.m., police responded to a report of suspicious activity on Union Street.
  • At 11:14 a.m., police located a man known to have an outstanding warrant on Highland Avenue. Brock A. Fleming, 19, of 33 Walter St., Salem, was arrested on a charge of possessing a sawed-off shotgun.
  • At 12:22 p.m., police responded to a report of a man asking for money in the Market Basket parking lot on Traders Way
  • At 3:03 p.m., a woman called police to report that a school bus struck her parked car and then left the scene. 
  • At 3:27 p.m., a woman called police to report that someone stole the catalytic converter off of her car while it was parked in the front lot of Salem High School.
