Police Crash Chinese New Year Party

The following information was provided by the Salem Police Department. Where charges are mentioned, it does not indicate a conviction.

The Salem Police responded to the following calls and made the following arrests on Saturday and Sunday.

Saturday, Feb. 18

4:01 p.m. — Children locked in a vehicle were reported on Traders Way. Police said the mother accidentally locked her kids in the vehicle. The children were fine and the Salem Fire Department was able to open the doors without incident.

4:02 p.m. — Threats were reported on Lafayette Street.

4:09 p.m. — Panhandlers were reported on North Street. Police said the people left before police arrived, and they were not able to find any panhandlers in the area.

4:14 p.m. — A truck stuck in the overhang at Citgo on Canal Street was reported.

4:20 p.m. — A loud television set was reported on Dow Street. When police arrived, everything was quiet.

4:47 p.m. — Police said suspicious activity was reported on Jefferson Avenue. Police received a call that a man had climbed through a window. Police spoke with the owner of the home who said her friend did climb through the window because the front door was locked. The woman said the man who climbed through the window was drunk and she told him to leave. He left before police arrived, and the officer told the woman to call back if the man returned.

5:34 p.m. — A past hit and run was reported on Hathorne Street. A man told police he came outside and he was not able to open his driver's side door. He said somebody had hit the front left quarter panel and it was pinching the driver's door in such a way that it would not open. Police said there were no witnesses. There was a dent with white paint on the man's car, police said.

5:56 p.m. — A dispute in a Lafayette Street laundromat was reported.

6:40 p.m. — Police responded to Pleasant Street to pick up needles. Police said the officer recovered contraband and possible drug intelligence.

6:51 p.m. — Police received a call about a man in a bucket truck on Powder House Lane. When the officer arrived, he discovered it was just National Grid working, and there was not a problem.

7:12 p.m. — Loud music was reported on Palmer Street. Police said the building was quiet when they arrived.

7:17 p.m. — Loiterers in the Washington Street Dunkin' Donuts parking lot were reported to police. The officer spoke with an employee who said a group had been hanging out for over an hour. The employee said the people were loud and he told them there were signs that read "no loitering." The same employee said a man came into the store and started to swear at him. By the time police responded, the man who allegedly cursed at the worker was gone.

8:48 p.m. — A bag was turned in to police from High Street Court. Police said the person was contacted and picked up the bag at the station.

9:38 p.m. — Police responded to a call about a rock thrown through the window of an Essex Street residence.

10:04 p.m. — A possible break-in was reported on Pope Street. Police spoke with two people who said they were concerned about the state of a relative's home, and said they thought someone may have entered it. They said a vase had been broken and items moved. Police had responded to the home twice over the two days prior for wellbeing checks. The police responded to examine the home. Photos were taken and several items were recovered for processing by the criminal investigation unit.

10:11 p.m. — Police said a road rage incident was reported on Jefferson Avenue and Ocean Avenue West. A woman said she was driving on Wilson Street when a vehicle was driving behind her and kept trying to pass. The woman said the person would get up to her bumper and then back off. The woman said the vehicles did not touch. The woman said she pulled over at the corner of Ocean Avenue West and Jefferson Avenue to speak with the other driver. The man in the vehicle behind the woman said he was driving from his home and the vehicle in front of him kept slowing down and then speeding up. The man said when the woman pulled over, they yelled at each other. The man said the vehicles did not touch. Police said both people had active licenses and were sent on their way.

11:24 p.m. — Police received a loud music complaint from Palmer Street.

Saturday Arrests

Laurancia Exilhomme, 25, of 35 Palmer St. was arrested on a charge of disturbing the peace.

Laurie E. Jenkins, 44, of 290 Washington St. was arrested on a warrant.

Sunday, Feb. 19

12:08 a.m. — Loud music was reported on Lafayette Street.

12:18 am. — Police received a loud music complaint on Derby Street. Police said there was no music when they arrived as the band was shut down and preparing to leave.

12:28 a.m. — A fight under the pedestrian ramp on Bridge Street was reported. When they arrived, police said there was no fight and the people were moved along.

12:44 a.m.  — Another possible fight was reported on Bridge Street. Police said there was no fight and the group was moved along.

12:50 a.m. — A possible fight was reported once again, this time on Sewall Street. Police said they responded to the parking lot and there was a large group. When the officer exited the cruiser, the group dispersed.

12:51 a.m. — A group refusing to move along was reported on Washington Street as bars were getting out, police said.

12:52 a.m. — Officers responded to the Sewall Street lot again on a call about a fight, but they were not able to locate a fight when they arrived.

1:08 a.m. — A large group in the street was reported on Federal Street. Police were not able to locate it.

1:13 a.m. — Another brick was thrown through a window, this time on Bridge Street. The resident said she was in another room when she heard glass shatter in the front of the home. She discovered a brick on the floor. She said she hasn't been having an issue with anyone. She said it is possible someone involved with her former roommate could be the culprit. Police said they would call the former roommate and the investigation will continue until they speak with her.

2:24 a.m. — A possible fight in residence was reported on Bridge Street. Police found a woman on the back porch of her residence. Officers said she had been yelling on the phone, but stopped when police arrived. Officers said she refused to answer the officer's questions, but said she did live at the residence. Police said it was clear the woman was intoxicated and when police were speaking with her she suddenly left and began walking down her driveway toward Bridge Street. She was taken into protective custody for her safety and the safety of the public, police said.

2:35 a.m. — Police received a loud noise complaint from Canal Street. Officers said they spoke to three people who were listening to loud music. They were advised they could be issued a citation if police returned.
 
2:51 a.m. — A large group in the street/a driveway were reported on Orchard Street. Police said they saw four women get into a car and leave the area. Nobody else was found.

2:58 a.m. — Police received a noise complaint from Pickering Way.

3:04 a.m. — Police received a call about a past assault on Dearborn Street. An officer spoke with a man who said he was jumped by three men when he left a party on Orchard Street. The man said he didn't know any of the men who assaulted him or how the fight started. At first the man told the officer he went to the party with friends who left him there. Then, police said, his story changed and he said he went to the party with a girl but she left with her other friends. The man had an abrasion by his left eye and scrapes and scratches on both arms. He refused medical attention. Due to his level of intoxication and his unwillingness to call anyone for a ride, police said he was taken into protective custody. He was advised to stay away from the residence where he was allegedly assaulted.

3:21 a.m. — A possible break-in in progress was reported on Aborn Street. All Salem units responded, police said. Police said a woman was looking out the first floor window when an officer ordered her to open the door. The woman said she lives in the first floor apartment and said nothing was wrong. Police said it was apparent the woman was upset. She told police she broke her own television and a mirror, but would not say anything else. Police said no injuries were observed and the woman refused medical treatment. A woman on the second floor told police she heard two men arguing out front. Police suspect the woman on the first floor had an argument that may have been domestic in nature.

4:22 a.m. — Police responded to a noise complaint on Boston Street. Police said they could hear a woman yelling from outside and it sounded like she was ready to fight. When the officer knocked on the door, a woman came to the door in an intoxicated state and said she just got back from a club in Boston with a few friends who were waiting for a taxi. She was advised to lower her voice.

8:09 a.m. — Stolen razors were reported at CVS.

8:22 a.m. — Police received a call a brick was thrown through a vehicle window on Ocean Avenue.  Police said sometime during the evening a brick was thrown through the driver's side rear window of a Volvo that was parked in the driveway of a home. The day prior, police said the man had to get to work and a vehicle was blocking his driveway. He called for police assistance and the vehicle was towed from the area and the plate was confiscated by police because the car was unregistered. Police said the brick incident could have been retaliation from the person whose car was towed. Police contacted the owner of the vehicle and she told them "she is not that kind of person and her vehicle broke down on Ocean Avenue and she was unable to move it from the driveway." The woman was told to stay away from Ocean Avenue and police told her there would be an investigation "to the fullest extent" if there is another incident.

8:35 a.m. — A woman walking barefoot in the area of Jefferson Avenue and Lawrence Street was reported to police. Police were not able to locate the woman.

9:32 a.m. — Items stolen from a Butler Street home were reported. A Playstation, iPods and and iPhone were taken, police said.

10:25 a.m. — Kids with an air rifle were reported at Clifton Avenue and Forest River Park. Police said the kids were brought home and the parent was advised the children should not play with air rifles in a public park.

10:42 a.m. — A person burning trash in the backyard of a Leach Street residence was reported to police. When they arrived, a person told them it was a Chinese New Year celebration party. The person told police "it was a Chinese tradition on their new year to burn certain items. It was a small item in a pot and they stated the ceremony was no longer than 10 minutes," police said. The party-goers were advised to properly dispose of all matter and make sure the fire was out when they were done, police said.

11:36 a.m. — An undesirable living on the playground was reported on Jackson Street. Police were not able to locate anyone.

11:45 a.m. — A coyote in a backyard pool was reported on North Street. Police said the coyote was put down. The animal had a compound fracture to once of its rear legs most likely from being struck by a vehicle, police said. The homeowner will call an exterminator, police said.

12:40 p.m. — A pocketbook was found on Hawthorne Boulevard.

12:49 p.m. — A bicycle was found on Witchcraft Road.

1:59 p.m. — Police received a call about a suspicious man on a Salem playground. Police said the man willfully tried to entice two female minors with a handwritten note in an attempt to engage in illicit activities of a sexual nature at approximately 1:30 p.m. Police said a warrant will be sought for the defendant's arrest.

2:08 p.m. — A man drinking alcohol inside a vehicle was reported on Old Road. Police were not able to find anyone.

2:52 p.m. — Loud music was reported on Walter Street.

3:22 p.m. — Kids with a possible BB gun was reported on New Liberty Street. Police were not able to locate them.

Friday Arrest

Timothy P. Gokey Jr., 28, of 9 Laurent Road in Salem was arrested on two charges of assault and battery by a dangerous weapon on a victim over 60, assault and battery of an elder or disabled person and malicious destruction of property.
