One Killed, One Critical After Pair Struck By Car in Salem

Salem police are investigating a fatal car accident that occurred on Marlborough Road Saturday night.

A 21-year-old Lynn man has died and a woman is listed in critical condition after both were struck while walking across Marlborough Road in Salem Saturday night.

At 9:28 p.m., police and fire units responded to a report of two pedestrians struck by a vehicle on Marlborough Road.

21-year-old Jonathan Acosta was transported by helicopter to Mass. General Hospital in Boston, where he died from injuries sustained in the accident, Sgt. David Tucker said.

Tania Mayorga, 21, of Lynn, was taken to the hospital by ambulance, where she was listed in critical condition late Sunday night, Tucker said.

Investigators believe both Mayorga and Acosta were hit by the first vehicle. Acosta was reportedly struck by a second vehicle after being thrown into the oncoming lane.

Although two vehicles were towed away from the scene, no charges have been brought against either of the drivers involved and neither alcohol nor speed were believed to have contributed to the accident, Tucker said.
