Man Tells Police He Was Mugged, Then Admits to Falling Into Salem Harbor

Salem police investigating a late-night mugging Saturday were thrown a curveball when the alleged victim admitted to falling into the harbor while urinating.

At 4:28 a.m., a local man called police to report that two men mugged him, stole his wallet and threw him into the harbor near the Congress Street bridge.

The man, who was reportedly heavily intoxicated when police arrived, was taken to the emergency room at Salem Hospital to be treated for a leg injury.

While at the hospital, the man eventually changed his story, telling police he fell into the harbor while urinating and said he made up the mugging story because he was embarrassed, according to this morning's police log post
