Two-Alarm Fire Scorches Perkins Street Apartment Building

Firefighters battled a blaze in a Perkins Street apartment building early Saturday morning.

Firefighters from a handful of North Shore communities extinguished a two-alarm fire Saturday morning that severely damaged an apartment building on Perkins Street.

At 6:35 a.m., Salem firefighters responded to 60 Perkins St. after receiving word that a fire had broken out on the second floor of the three-story, six-family apartment building.

Firefighters from Lynn, Marblehead, Peabody and Beverly assisted with fighting the fire, which was under control by about 7:30 a.m.

Fire investigators determined that the cause of the fire was an unattended candle left burning in a second-floor apartment, Deputy Chief Glen Beaudet said.

Approximately 20 people were displaced as a result of the fire and there were no reported injuries, Beaudet said.
