FBI Report: Violent Crime on the Rise in Salem

New crime statistics were recently released by the FBI.


159 violent crimes were reported in Salem in 2012, according to new statistics released by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

The 2012 number is up from 2011's total of 119 violent crimes.

The FBI's annual Uniform Crime Report includes information submitted by local law enforcement agencies. The information is compiled and released to the public in the fall of the year that follows the reported year. Violent crime, as defined by the report, includes murder and nonnegligent manslaughter, forcible rape, robbery, and aggravated assault.

In 2012, Salem reported seven forcible rapes, 22 robberies and 82 aggravated assaults.

In addition to violent crimes, Salem reported 955 property crimes in 2012. There were 173 burglaries, 744 instances of larceny or theft and 69 motor vehicle thefts.
