Elderly Salem Man Struck by Vehicle in Peabody

An 83-year-old Salem man was taken to the hospital with injuries Monday evening after being struck by a vehicle on Main Street in Peabody.

Peabody Police spokesman Michael Crane said a 911 call came in at 5:11 p.m., alerting officers that a pedestrian was hit near 168 Main St., which is between the corners with Pierpont Street and Eagan Place.

Crane said officers arrived at the scene to find one male victim with a head injury and later identified him as an 83-year-old Salem resident who lives on Boston Street. The man was initially treated at the scene and then taken to Salem Hospital.

The patient was later transferred to Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, but Crane did not know the man's condition. Reports at the time of the accident indicated EMTs performed CPR on the man before he was taken to the hospital.

Crane said the driver involved in the accident did remain on the scene and no charges have been filed.

Crane said that according to an incident report, the vehicle was traveling east on Main Street and in the midst of changing lanes when the driver noticed too late that a pedestrian had stepped into the road.

There is a crosswalk at Pierpont Street, but Crane said, there was no mention in the report of a crosswalk at the accident scene.

State police also responded to the scene and reconstructed the accident. Crane said the incident is still under investigation and it was unclear from the initial report which part of the vehicle actually struck the man.
