Three Injured, Dog Killed in Chain Reaction Accident in Salem

Two women were injured and dog was killed Monday following a motor vehicle accident on Boston Street in Salem.

Two women were taken to the hospital Monday night following a car accident on Boston Street that resulted in the death of a local dog.

At 8:51 p.m., Salem police and fire units responded to the area of 114 Boston St. for a report of a motor vehicle accident "with a pedestrian down" according to today's police log.

An injured man on scene told police he was walking out of his house with his unleashed pet Pekinese when the dog suddenly ran out into the street. The man told police the dog "always followed him on the sidewalk" and didn't need a leash.

The man reportedly told police he panicked and ran into the street after his dog, causing a two-vehicle accident that ultimately resulted in the death of his pet.

Witnesses told police a vehicle that slammed on its brakes to avoid striking the animal was rear-ended, causing it to move forward into both the man and his dog.

The two women driving the cars that collided were transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The man admitted being struck by a car but refused medical attention on scene, according to the police log entry.
