Mandatory Recycling Begins in Salem Today

. You'll want to be prepared for more wet weather today. The National Weather Service is predicting that local residents can expect rain and thunderstorms, with a high near 76. Tonight should be rainy, with a low around 67. (sunrise, 5:09 a.m.; high tide, 6:49 a.m.; low tide, 1:05 p.m.; high tide, 7:19 p.m.; sunset, 8:24 p.m.)

. Don't forget! The city's new mandatory recycling policy begins in Salem today. City residents will be given a three-month grace period to comply with the new regulations, but try to remember this week when bringing your trash out curbside!

. Salem's Design Review Board will meet tonight on the third-floor of the City Hall Annex on Washington Street. The meeting is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m., according to the posted agenda

. Salem police have identified the elderly woman who was killed in a hit-and-run accident on Loring Avenue Saturday morning. Feliksa Mieszczanska, 83, of 466 Loring Ave., Salem, was crossing the street near 464 Loring Ave. when she was struck by a car at 9:08 a.m.

. Today in History: On July 1, 1881, the world's first international telephone call was made between St. Stephen, New Brunswick, Canada and Calais, Maine.
