$45M Dodge Street Development Public Hearing Tuesday

Here are the five things you need to know before you start your day in Salem.





Today is Monday, July 8, and here are the five things you need to know: 


1. It looks like we'll get some rain and a much-needed break from the recent heat wave today. The National Weather Service is predicting that local residents can expect showers, thunderstorms and a high near 81. Tonight should be mostly cloudy, with a low around 65. (sunrise, 5:13 a.m.; low tide, 6:36 a.m.; high tide, 12:38 p.m.; low tide, 6:36 p.m.; sunset, 8:22 p.m.)

2RCG, a developer based in Somerville, is hoping to erect a five-to-six story building on a 29,000-square-foot parcel bordered by Washington and Dodge streets with space for a hotel, retail space, offices and housing units. A public hearing regarding "the abandonment of that portion of the Riley Plaza roadway right-of-way" will be held at City Hall Tuesday at 7 p.m.

3. According to an event recently posted on our site, there will be a Battle of the Bands in Salem on July 13. Click Here for all the details. 

4. The City Council Committee on Ordinances, Licenses & Legal Affairs will meet at City Hall tonight. The meeting, scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m., is expected to feature a taxi operator hearing, according to the posted agenda

5. Today in History: On July 8, 1730, a magnitude 8.7 earthquake caused a tsunami that damaged more than 620 miles of Chile's coastline.
