"Winter Waterfowl at the Sound Underwater Diner"

2014 Underwater in Salem Sound Lecture Series

"Winter Waterfowl at the Salem Sound Underwater Diner"

It may be cold outside for people, but not for the birds that migrate here to spend spend the winter in our warm (for them!) coastal waters.

Take the Loon...Most people associate Loons with northern lakes, but right now these same Loons can be seen in our coastal waters, along

with many other fascinating waterfowl visible in Salem Sound only during the winter.

In
this, the first presentation of the 2014 “Underwater in Salem Sound” Lecture series, Dr.
Robert Buchsbaum, Conservation Scientist with Mass Audubon, will introduce us
to the Loons, Eiders, Surf Scoters, Buffleheads, Red-breasted Mergansers and other
seasonal guests that fly south to our region from the cold Arctic to feast on
the abundant fishes, snails, mussels and underwater plants in Salem Sound. These birds can often be seen from the shoreline.

This
lecture series is sponsored jointly by Salem Sound Coastwatch and Marblehead’s
Abbot Public Library. The presentation is free and open to the public.

Other topics in the 2014 series include:

  • "History Revealed by the Sea Floor" - by Dr. Brad Hubeny, Profefssor of Geological Sciences at Salem State University on February 26.
  • "Changing Climate, Changing Fishes" - by Dr. Mike Armstrong, Assistant Director MA Marine Fisheries on March 26.
  • "Shellfish, Shellfish Everywhere and Not a Clam to Eat!" - By Barbara Warren, Executive Director of Salem Sound Coastwatch on April 30.
