Salem Philharmonic Orchestra Winter Concert Series

The 2013 Salem Philharmonic Orchestra Winter Concert Series announces its 108th season, coming soon, throughout the entire month of January. As always, the concerts are free to the public, and are handicap accessible. Each will be held at Salem High School Auditorium, 77 Willson Street, on the four Sundays of the month, with performances starting at 3:30 PM.

The concerts feature diverse programs played by a 45 piece orchestra of talented, mostly professional musicians, along with some selected amateurs and a guest soloist featured at each concert. The final concert also features the Salem High School Symphony Orchestra, where student players perform a generous segment of music, then later combine with The Salem Philharmonic for a grand, two-orchestra experience. Conducting this exciting schedule of performances will be Alan Hawryluk, conductor of the orchestra for the past 47 years.

The first program, January 6th, features pianist Chia-Jung Tsay. Chia-Jung Tsay has been recognized by USA Today as an “internationally-acclaimed pianist.” At age sixteen, she made her debut at Carnegie Hall as a result of winning first place at the World Piano Competition. Tsay was chosen, along with three string players, to perform the World Premiere of the New York Youth Symphony commissioned Piano Quartet by composer Gordon Beeferman, again at Carnegie Hall.

Tsay has performed as a guest soloist with various symphonies, including the San Francisco Concerto Orchestra, the Bay Shore Symphony, the Salem Philharmonic Orchestra, the Island Senior Symphony, and the Sarah Lawrence Orchestra. She has performed at New York’s Steinway Hall, Lincoln Center, and Eastman Theatre; Evans Hall in Connecticut; Aronoff Center for the Performing Arts in Cincinnati; and Dean Lesher Center for the Arts in San Francisco. Featured in the New York Times and New York Newsday, she also performed at Steinway Hall for a documentary televised by The Learning Channel.

We welcome one and all to participate in this grand Salem tradition and enjoy exceptional performances of guest performers with our esteemed local orchestra, the Salem Philharmonic. It is one of the great cultural resources that makes the city of Salem such an exciting place.
