Will Salem City Council Elect a President Tonight?

Salem City Council will gather tonight at City Hall to elect a council president.

When members of Salem City Council convene tonight at City Hall, it will be the first time the group has met since Thursday night, when councilors failed to select a replacement for Joan Lovely despite voting 300 times over a span of seven hours.

With that kind of performance to follow, there's no telling how long tonight's meeting will last, considering councilors will be charged with electing a council president and several committee chairmen.

Regardless of tonight's outcome, council members are scheduled to meet again Tuesday night to continue the debate over who will replace Lovely - Steven Pinto, Lucy Corchado or one of four other candidates.

So, we have to ask - what do you expect from tonight's meeting?

Will you be attending?

Do you expect city councilors will quickly elect a council president after receiving so many complaints regarding their last meeting?

Do you expect another marathon meeting?

Let us know in the comments section below.

There had previously been an agreement on who would be president. It will be interesting to see if that holds still. My thoughts on the rest of that debacle won't fit here, but they're posted here. http://keepitklassysalem.blogspot.com/2013/01/an-open-letter-to-salem-city-council.html

I expect them to appoint someone who has been keeping themselves up to date on current city business, someone who will represent all of Salem and not just the current politicians, someone who has worked for the citizens vote!

They have to pick a sitting councilor.

After the complete waist of time last week, how can the council move forward when they are missing a seat? Do first things first, they are overwhelmed with simplicity.

Maybe if people really wanted your opinion they would read it on your website??? Instead you hack Salem Patch with your editorial.

The date of the meeting tonight is set in the charter.

You know that's kinda like saying "Again the Constitution???" right?

The Salem City Council is a waste. The only former member of the council with any brains was Jean Pelletier. Too bad he wasn't reelected. it will interesting to see what the idiots do tonight.
