New Dorm Coming to Salem State University

A plan is in motion to construct a new dorm at Salem State University.

Salem State University is hoping to add a new dorm to campus, the Salem News is reporting

According to a story published in the Friday edition of The Salem News, the university has opened the door for area designers to submit proposals for a new dorm expected to house between 350 and 400 students.

The university's latest dorm, Marsh Hall, recently received a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council. Click Here for the full story.

The request lists a tentative schedule of construction starting in the spring of 2014, according to the Salem News article.

Interesting, I heard a few months ago the dorm is going to be built on the old Weir valve block including the Dinner and Loring Liquors areas,

Just what we need, more residents and more pedestrian/car traffic.

Sounds like exactly what SSC needs. It's a thriving university that needs more housing for its students. I would think having more housing means less commuters and less traffic. Seems like a win win to me. I hope the build goes well.

I'd hate to lose the Salem Diner.

I toured a house on Raymond Road backing up to Rainbow Terrace and an SSU parking lot last night. Either that house was WAY overpriced, or your property values are flourishing.

the owner of the liquor store would be stupid to sell out without a place to go close by.

Your point of view is just espousing fear, doubt and insecurity. I live in south Salem, pass by Salem State at least several times a day, and have never seen the behavior you are talking about. I even have the Salem State Police in my scanner, and listen to them pulling over NON Salem State Students all night (since there's nothing to do on campus).

Same, but this whole area is a blight and needs to be redeveloped. Particularly the Bertinis side. The Grand Marquis driving "Navy hat on the parcel shelf" crowd will only take them another few years. Hopefully the state has their eyes on these parcels for integration with SSU.

"I'll bet SSU can build right next to your house if they want to do so. Anybody else share these concerns?" Funny you should say that, I was thinking how ironic it is calling the newest dorm Marsh hall seeing how its was built partially over the old marsh area.

Any one else notice how little traffic there was yesterday morning? Salem State spring break...
