5 Things You Need to Know Today: Nov. 26

Here are the five things you need to know before you start your day in Salem.

Today is Monday, Nov. 26, and here are the five things you need to know:

1. It should be another nice day in Salem. The National Weather Service is predicting that local residents can expect it to be sunny, with a high near 45. Tonight should be partly cloudy, with a low around 29. (sunrise, 6:48 a.m.; high tide, 9:23 a.m.; low tide, 3:40 p.m.; sunset, 4:13 p.m.)

2. If all goes as planned, the much-maligned yellow building on the Universal Steel site has already been knocked down with a wrecking ball. Click Here to read this week's A Voice in Salem column, which is focused on the history of the building.

3. Have you heard local residents talking about the unexplained explosions that have been reported in Salem over the last few weeks? Click Here to read some of the interesting theories our readers have come up with to explain the unusual noises.

4. The Salem School Committee's Personnel Subcommittee will meet tonight at Collins Middle School on Highland Avenue. The meeting is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. Click Here to view the posted agenda.

5. Today in History: On Nov. 26,1863, President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed Nov. 26 as national Thanksgiving Day, to be celebrated annually on the final Thursday of November.
