5 Things You Need to Know Today: Feb. 21

Our daily digest of facts to keep you in-the-know on everything Salem.

Welcome to 5 Things You Need to Know Today, your place for useful facts. We'll provide this early morning digest each weekday to keep Salemites and Salem Patch users in-the-know.

  1. Yesterday the Salem Fire Department responded to a morning fire on Jefferson Avenue. It was also a notable day in the department's history. Five of 10 of the department's line of duty deaths have occurred in February. Two occurred on Feb. 20. The following was posted on the SFD Facebook page yesterday "In 1902, Firefighter Frank M. Godfrey was killed in the Line Of Duty. Also killed on this date at a 4-Alarm fire in 1982 was Firefighter Raymond V. McSwiggin."
  2. If you are interested in learning more about the building involved in yesterday's fire, we did a profile on one of the businesses at 63 Jefferson Ave. last month — Playful Pets Doggie Daycare. You can see some of the building and learn more here
  3. Just a reminder — since yesterday was Presidents Day, trash pickup will be delayed one day this week.
  4. Remember BaldBil's Burger Brigade from last year? Well, Bil and friends are at it again and this time, they're taking on chicken wings.  Follow Michele Brown's blog on Operation Chicken Wing here. Thanks for the tasty review, Michele!
  5. We love to feature interesting people doing great things. This weekend, we featured a teen who is doing her part to help kids a world away. If you have any suggestions for a Greatest Person article, let us know.
