5 Things (And a CinemaSalem Update) Dec. 13

Here are the five things you need to know before you start your day in Salem.

Today is Wednesday, Dec. 13, and here are the five things you need to know:

1. It should be another pleasant day in Salem. The National Weather Service is predicting that local residents can expect it to be sunny, with a high near 42. Tonight should be mostly clear, with a low around 35. (sunrise, 7:05 a.m.; high tide, 10:24 a.m.; sunset, 4:10 p.m.; low tide, 4:48 p.m.)

2. An online fundraising effort to save CinemaSalem that kicked off earlier this month is within $7,000 of reaching its goal and gaining momentum. Theater Owner Paul Van Ness has enlisted the help of Kickstarter, an online fundraising platform, in the hopes of raising the $60,000 needed to buy digital projectors.

3. Need a nice local story to lift your spirits this holiday season? A local man who accidentally left his Christmas shopping money in a shoulder bag on the roof of his car and drove off had it returned to him by a woman who found it in the middle of the road. 4. The city's Conservation Commission will meet tonight at Salem City Hall. The meeting is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m., Click Here for all of the details.

5. Today in History: On Dec. 13, 2003, former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein was captured near his home town of Tikrit.
