Longboards Cafe & Bar Opening Soon in Salem

Longboards Cafe & Bar will open next month on Pickering Wharf in Salem.

Longboards Cafe & Bar will open next month in the Pickering Wharf storefront that was formerly home to The Hungry Whale.

Brother owners Justin and Matthew Mattera were still hard at work Tuesday afternoon, wrapping up a six-month renovation project aimed at transforming the interior of the Wharf Street commercial space from a small 600-square-foot sandwich shop into a full 2,000-square-foot restaurant and bar.

"We hope to have a great restaurant down here and will concentrate on micro-beers, unique wines and a variety of specialty cocktails," Justin Mattera said Tuesday. "The house special will be our famous lobster roll and our new assortment of creative flat-bread sandwiches."

Similar to The Hungry Whale, the front end of the business will offer a small indoor and outdoor seating area and a counter where customers on the go can place take-out orders.

Up a ramp into the back, the space opens up into a modern bar area, complete with with several large flat-screen televisions, where Mattera said he and his brother hope to showcase local sports teams.
