Longboards Cafe & Bar Opening Soon in Salem

Longboards Cafe & Bar will open next month on Pickering Wharf in Salem.

Longboards Cafe & Bar will open next month in the Pickering Wharf storefront that was formerly home to The Hungry Whale.

Brother owners Justin and Matthew Mattera were still hard at work Tuesday afternoon, wrapping up a six-month renovation project aimed at transforming the interior of the Wharf Street commercial space from a small 600-square-foot sandwich shop into a full 2,000-square-foot restaurant and bar.

"We hope to have a great restaurant down here and will concentrate on micro-beers, unique wines and a variety of specialty cocktails," Justin Mattera said Tuesday. "The house special will be our famous lobster roll and our new assortment of creative flat-bread sandwiches."

Similar to The Hungry Whale, the front end of the business will offer a small indoor and outdoor seating area and a counter where customers on the go can place take-out orders.

Up a ramp into the back, the space opens up into a modern bar area, complete with with several large flat-screen televisions, where Mattera said he and his brother hope to showcase local sports teams.

Is there a beer variety or favorite food item that you're hoping will be included on the Longboards Cafe and Bar menu when it opens next month?

Let us know in the comments section below.

We'll be sure to let you know when Longboards is ready to open.

The Flatbreads will be uniquely crafted with local ingredients and are more of an artisan pizza than a sandwich. However both our flatbreads and sandwiches will be served on cutting boards. The menu in the restaurant will also offer some fantastic apps and tasty desserts. The take-out menu will feature our delicious sandwiches and salads. Hope to see everyone in a few days!

Do we need yet another restaurant with a row of TVs?? Can't we go to dinner with our friends and not have to watch TV?

uh-oh according to that sign the cafe and bar is on the ceiling. IS THIS A RESTAURANT FOR SPIDER-MAN??? I need to know as my pal J. Jonah Jameson is coming to visit next month and I don't want to have an awkward evening.

Sounds like a Great spot on the water to grab a bite ro eat, cold beer an enjoy the game... Looking foward to your opening. @ Paula, with respect, I couldn't disagree more. There are about 5k restaurants on the NS where you can sit quietly and eat with your friends. Sounds like these guys have a pretty unique idea and a good understanding of what their restaurant is offering here. Looking forward to your opening..! Best of luck..!

I just googled "famous lobster roll" and after 20 pages found no reference to the business featured in this article. Once this place opens perhaps a certain gentleman will stop obnoxiously haunting other local watering holes. That will be a plus.

Petey, what a great review! We may have added many more sears, however many of our food items from the old shop will make the switch with us. Our lobster roll was such a fan favorite, it's unbelievable just how many we sold. Thanks for taking the time to share, please introduce yourself to us when you make your maiden voyage to Longboards! Thanks again to everyone for the well wishes, the whole staff is so excited to show off our new place! Cheers!

good luck - can't wait to try it! (p.s. surprised by the negativity in these comments. not sure why there would be opinions before you've even opened ... the internet gives haters a lot of courage!)
