Family, Friends and Food at the Hungry Whale

The Mattera brothers are excited to keep growing their Pickering Wharf business.

Brothers Justin and Matthew Mattera say they're dedicated to promoting community and staying true to their roots at they continue to grow their business.

The brothers, originally from Swampscott, own the , a new addition to Salem this year. Both brothers said they are excited about the possibilities at their spot on Pickering Wharf.

"We just wanted to do this," Justin said. "When this location came up, we just jumped on it."

"We're young and energetic," Matthew added. "We can work endless hours and we've got endless ideas."

The store, which currently offers a selection of specialty sandwiches with an ever-growing selection, also offers ice cream. There are also some bigger plans in the works.

In the near future, the Mattera brothers said they're hoping to transform the shop into a restaurant that offers the experience of a sit down meal, to the comfortable laid-back atmosphere of a Nantucket dining spot and the convenience of take-out.

The brothers said they'll keep sandwiches and ice cream at the restaurant, where they hope to have Italian offerings.

"It will be a nice little game change," Justin said. And whatever happens at the Hungry Whale, Justin said he is dedicated to "customer service, straight customer service."
