I spotted some recent progress at the future home of the Clam Shack - a new eatery being constructed inside what was formerly a Salem Willows restroom/bathhouse.

It's been almost a year since the city's Park and Recreation Commission approved a five-year lease for Angelo Meimeteas, a local resident who, with his brother, George, owns and operates The Clam Shanty in Wells, Maine, The Salem News reported.

The terms of the lease, according to The Salem News article, require Meimeteas to pay "no rent for five years as long as he puts at least $30,000 into the building."

What do you think?

Free rent on public property is unfair to other businesses and the taxpayers. During the off season they will not have any expenses unlike the others. I would be willing to bet the $30k went to equipment that they will end up owning. Was the property advertised to the public rent free or is this a another inside deal? I can't go to Winter Island in the summer without paying but this business pays nothing to make money on public property. What's next a private parking lot for the Clam Shack?

Yes John, you and anyone else could have submitted a proposal last year - http://www.salem.com/pages/SalemMA_LegalNotices/I03D30EE7 Only one proposal was submitted, and that was the Clam Shack.

I think having a new restaurant will be an addition to what is already there and bring in more people. However, this is one thing that I wish business owners would do - and that is to pick up trash in front of their businesses during the day and evening instead of waiting for the city workers to do it for them It is unsightly and there is no reason for it.

Why would a business owner pick up trash on city property? Salem gave a street to PEM and they want to give the transfer station away as well. Who pays property tax among these businesses? None of them. The Clam Shack gets free rent, no property tax and free grounds keeping. What a deal! Make as much as you can for 5 years and then see you later.
