BeFit Hosts 'Barbells for Boobs' In Honor of Salem Cancer Survivor

Mammograms in Action fundraiser to be held Saturday morning at BeFit in Beverly.

Beverly's BeFit Health and Wellness co-owners Jane Drinkwater and Holly Leonard have been so inspired by Salem breast-cancer survivor, Theresa DeFrancis, they're hosting a breast cancer awareness fundraiser in her honor.

The event is a nationwide fundraiser called 'Barbells For Boobs,' which raises money for Mammograms In Action, a nonprofit organization that is dedicated to providing funding for qualified low income and uninsured women and men who need screening and/or diagnostic procedures in the prevention of breast cancer.

"We wanted to host an event for breast cancer awareness because Theresa has been such an amazing inspiration for us both," Leonard said. "We thought what better way to bring awareness than to gather our BeFit community together to raise funds for those that can't afford proper services."

Everyone's invited to participate in the 2.5 hour workout on Saturday morning from 8-10:30 a.m.

"It is meant to be a fun, social, community event to raise awareness for a great cause," Leonard said. "Anyone can participate, including local residents who do not workout with us."

A $25 donation to Mammograms for Action is the cost for the event. Leonard told The Salem News, every $80 raised will pay for a mammogram, and they hope to raise at least $2,000 for the organization.

"Theresa does not let breast cancer define her," the co-owners said. "Her spirit and drive along with her positive attitude leaves no challenge to big for her to tackle."
