Have You Heard---

This week in history: December 12

Find out what's happening in Salemwith free, real-time updates from Patch.

In 1922, the Irish Free State was formed following the signing of the Anglo-Irish Treaty.

In 1941, in a surprise attack, the US Fleet at Pearl Harbor was attacked.  A total of 2,335 U.S. servicemen were killed and 1,143 were wounded. Sixty-eight civilians were also killed and 35 were wounded. The attack brought the United States into World War II.

In 1967, Otis Redding, 26, was killed in a plane crash at Lake Monona, Wisconsin. A few years back, a friend stated that Otis only did one song. Oh how wrong you are, K.O.

In 1969, at California’s Altamont Speedway, The Rolling Stones held a free concert, using Hells Angels as security. 4 people were killed including one, caught on film with a gun. The Stones were playing “Sympathy for the Devil” when that happened. It was several years before they played it again at a concert.

In 1972, Baseballs American League instituted the Designated Hitter Rule, testing it out for 3 seasons. How do you think it’s doing?

In 1980, John Lennon was shot to death outside the Dakoda Apartments in NYC by a crazed gunman. Many people remember where they were when they heard the news, much like the JFK killing years earlier. I was on Ocean Avenue in Revere at 6:30AM, headed to work. I had to pull over to absorb the news.

In 2003, the US Congress passed a law controlling the use of spam. Apparently my computer is exempt from the law.

Birthdays:

Kirk Douglas 97, Judi Dench 79, Dionne Warwick 73, Dickie Betts 70, Greg Allman 66, Tom Waits (I’d rather have a bottle in front of me than a frontal lobotomy) 64, Joan Armatrading 63, Kim Basinger (9 ½ Weeks)60, Steven Wright 58, Larry Bird 57, Sinead O’Connor 47.

Local notables celebrating birthdays this week:  Bob Kerr and Keith Broderick. Happy Birthday you handsome devils.

“The very existence of flamethrowers proves that some time, somewhere, someone said to themselves, You know, I want to set those people over there on fire, but I'm just not close enough to get the job done." George Carlin

Weather from atop Mt Washington. This was recorded last night at 7PM: Snow, fog, visibility zero, wind west at 29MPH, high/low temp  0/-7 degrees, snow depth 6”   Now, don’t you feel better?

So, last night, rather than go out exploring the music scene, Pam and I stayed in to watch a DVD I had rented, Rocky and Bullwinkle. Some of you of a certain age know that this is the best cartoon series ever. If you go out to rent one, make sure you get Rocky and Bullwinkle and Friends. We didn’t get the friends, so we didn’t see Dudley Do Right, Mr. Peabody, or Fractured Flickers. My favorite of the evening was from Frostbite Falls, Minnesota and it starred the Three Moosketeers. LOOKOUT. He’s lost his mind.

Last week---

Well, Pam and I don’t have any of those pay channels so we have to wait for our favorite shows to come out on DVD. Last Thursday we finally got to see the end of Breaking Bad. OMG what a great show. But like all great shows, I hate that it’s over. But we got that in early so it was time to go check out the new band Peabody and his Peoples, down at The Pig. You know I love this guy and he really is one of the reasons that Salem is such a fun place to live. I think we’ll be seeing more from this band so keep your eyes open. I don’t know where PBD finds time for all these bands and keep his day job too.

I’m still searching for that perfect gift for you so I didn’t hear much last week. But I did get down to Brodies Seaport for my favorite, weekly show, Sunday Funday, last week featuring Ken Clark on the B-3. You know, there is lots of great music in town all the time but it doesn’t always get you peeps up dancing. That was certainly not the case last week cus there were more people dancing than I have seen in a long time. Great show AGAIN guys.

My picks in the coming week:

Looks like we have some weather headed our way this weekend but don’t let that bother you. Come on, were from New England. Park that car, dismount and fight on foot. Just dress for it.

Tonight, Thursday, if you find yourself looking for some good, live music, Henley Douglas and Friends will be down at the Pig. Showtime is 9PM

Terry Brenner brings lots of great shows to town and this week he is showcasing Asa Brebner at Murphy’s on Saturday afternoon. I know I’ll be there but there is a question of what time. Murphy’s website says 5PM but others say 4PM. Either way, it’s recommended by Terry and that’s good enough for me.

I’m having a bit of trouble finding consistency in some websites. I know OPUS has music several nights but can only find a couple of listings for this week. If you go, you need to find who’s playing on your own. But I do know that Barrence Whitfield is there on Saturday. I’m not gonna miss that show.

Sunday Funday at Brodies Seaport. YUP. But I checked Chris Fitz’s website, which is where I get info on this, and I see Chris has another gig and I don’t know the special guest. But fear not, I’m sure Mr. Peabody has it under control. See ya there.

After, if you haven’t worn out your dancing shoes, head on down to In a Pigs Eye where The Pocket Money Orchestra featuring Brian Cogger will be rocking the house. If you haven’t heard these guys, git youseff down there. They are THE BOMB.

Have a great week and don’t spend too much on my present.

This list was put together with much help from STANSLIST. See his site here:  http://www.stanslist.com  Thanks Stan.

Please excuse any incorrect spelling and omissions. But sometimes I make up words too, CORDWANGERS!!!

Go out and listen to some great LIVE music in the wonderful, strange, historic and hip town of Salem, Massachusenutts.

And tip your bartenders and servers.

And always check with the venue as times and schedules change. (and I sometimes Feck up)

Peace, Love and Zydeco.
