The Tavern follow’s that at 9 with Lois Lane and the Daily Planets. I think I got it right this week, Peg.

The Lobster Shanty has Release The Hounds for their last live music event of the season. Y’all know they will be closed after January 15, re-opening April 1. I even hear that Salem State Radio, WMWM famous DJ Dave Babcock is coming out to hear them tonight. My Pick of the Weekend!

43 Church has the lovely Megan McKenzie performing. Looks like the HARDLY OUT OF THE WAY rule is in effect tonight.

Sunday, January 13

Lookie Lookie Here. Something new is happening down at The Grapevine on Congress Street. I don’t remember them having music before but starting today, and each Sunday in January, Barrence Whitfield is playing their Sunday Brunch from 11AM to 2PM. You gotta love that. You heard it right, BARRENCE WHITFIELD.

Sunday/Funday is the weekly jam at Brodie’s Seaport Café, starting around 4:15. This weekly event, hosted by the amazing talents of Steve Peabody (PBD) and Chris Fitz is always my Pick of the Afternoon. This week’s special guest is the hardest working woman in New England Blues, Lisa Marie.

O’Neill’s has their weekly Irish Session starting around 4 today. Bring the kids. It’s that kind of show.

Capt’s has Jazz Brunch at noon. Peter Kostopolous is on the bill.

In a Pigs Eye has the return of The Ervin Dhimo Trio.

Howling Wolf has Steve Spungin.

I don’t usually encourage people to leave Salem but if you have it in you, Joe Mack runs a great Blues Jam every Sunday night down at Celly’s on Western Ave in Lynn. Celly’s is an amazing room. Not at all what I expected. When I was last there, I saw a sign on the wall for an optometrist, which brought back memories of my first trip to get set up with 4 EYES, back around 1960. Yup, right in that very room. Ok, I have to say, I am from Lynn. What can I say. Apologies to Don White.

Monday, January 14

In a Pigs Eye has Spike Emerson doing the open mic tonight.

Shows you may have missed:

Last Wednesday, I wandered out to hear the jazz duo at Village Tavern. The very talented flute player Ellen Berruhmoun accompanied on guitar by Arnie Rosen played a very entertaining couple of sets. I never before heard anyone do any songs by the late Rahsaan Roland Kirk. They did their version of My Cherie Amore, a Stevie Wonder Original. If you like Jazz, and I do, you need to check out this weekly Wednesday series. (I hope I spelled your name right, Ellen)

I got hung up with some friends, leading to a VERY long lunch, so I missed the jam at the Pig last week. But I did catch Vein down at The Shanty Friday evening. I’m really gonna miss those shows. Kinda makes me want to pack up and leave the country until they reopen.

The new show Saturday afternoon at Village Tavern was a huge success. Eric, Jeff and Brian from The Jackleg Preachers got the crowd going pretty well. I hope they decide to keep this series going cus it’s such a good time to be out.

Sunday/Funday, at Brodies Seaport Café, always my Pick of the Afternoon every Sunday, was again fantastic last week. Danny Banks, who I hadn’t heard before, was the special guest guitarist. That man can PLAY!!!

Ok, yes. I am leaving the country for an extended stay in Ireland, starting February 1. Salem’s own John Andrews is going to fill in writing this blog in my absence. He will probably do a better job. I’m still here for a few weeks thou.

This list was put together with much help from STANSLIST. See his site here:  http://www.stanslist.com  Thanks Stan.

Please excuse any incorrect spelling and omissions.

Go out and listen to some great LIVE music in the wonderful, strange, hip town of Salem.

And tip your bartenders and servers.

And always check with the venue as times and schedules change. (and I sometimes mess up)

Hope to see you out there!

Today’s picture is showing Juke Joint Five, playing down at In a Pig’s Eye a few months back. Like I said, don’t miss this show!!!! Juke Joint Five are Jason Adams (bass); Gretchen Bostrom (vocals); Dick "The Poet" Lourie (sax); Silvertone Steve (Guitar); Noah Teshu (drums).
