"And the Wind Cried Mary" Jimi Hendrix

Get out while the gettin's good

Have You Heard---

“Fall is a Ball”, to quote an old ad from WBCN. I won’t say the rest of it but ask when you see me and I’ll quote. Fall officially begins Saturday.

The week in history: Jimi Hendrix died in 1970 at age 27. He would be 69. He’s been gone longer than he was here. WOW!

Find out what's happening in Salemwith free, real-time updates from Patch.

Salem Farmers Market has Brad Byrd performing at 5PM.  I had a comment last week that I was wrong about who was performing. I get my info from the Farmers Market website. Sorry for the confusion. Also today, 43 Church is having a cooking demonstration. Check it out.

In a Pigs Eye is hosting Lydia Harrell.

Michael Fioretti and Chris Noyes are performing at Howling Wolf.

The Session returns to 43 Church tonight with their weekly residency. This is the first Thursday all summer that I’m not working. I’m gonna check this out. See you there.

Rockafellas is having Hot Like Fire, the cool, reggae band.  Ya Mon.

Release the Hounds are at Seaport Cafe.

The Lobster Shanty has Dave Bailin. I’m sure this will be acoustic, not the kick butt full band. But Dave is always a good take. Stop in for a cold one after shopping at Farmers Market. Perfect. I’m going to miss this show too. Commitments. When did I ever find time to work full time?

Scratch Kitchen continues their live music series, tonight featuring Adam Payne This is a great food and drink venue also. Check them out.

Gulu Gulu has Lowman.

Finz does not have Henley tonight but he returns next week for his weekly gig here. Tonight, we celebrate Halfway to St. Patrick’s Day, with Conor Shannahan. (I think he played on St Patrick’s Day too.) That means in 6 months, I’ll be watching the parade in downtown Dublin. More about that later.

Friday, September 21

Howling Wolf has The North Shore Acoustic Project.

The Strungout Playboys with Tony Gallo are at Seaport Café.  Now I’ve never seen or heard this band but Tony is one of the most entertaining and talented musicians around. I’ve heard him at Tony’s, in Lynn, when they used to have a Friday Jazz Jam, I’ve heard White Lightning, heard him Solo--- I could go on but let’s just say, don’t miss this show. And ladies, he’s easy on the eyes too. Sorry Tony.  My Pick of the Evening. See you there.

The weekly blues jam at In a Pigs Eye with Jackleg Preachers.

The Lobster Shanty has their house band Vein tonight and every Friday night. This show is one of my favorites in town and on a nice end of summer evening, come on by.

Rockafellas has Spike the Punch.

Tonight, Gulu Gulu has Mark T. Small

O’Neill’s has Irish Session from 6-9PM tonight and every Friday.

Take Two is playing at Finz.

Black Lobster is showcasing Bar Flyz on the patio. Should be a beautiful night out there but bring a light jacket unless you intend to dance to keep warm. On the other hand, not a bad idea.

Saturday, September 22

O’Neill’s has Irish music from 6-9PM tonight and every Saturday.

Seaport Café has Driving Blind.  Check out their new menu too.

Rockafellas has Pulse. Bring your dancing shoes, ladies.

Gulu Gulu has Birdface Show starts at 8.

Soul Rebel Project are down at Vic’s Boathouse.

Extreme Reggae returns to the Black Lobster with Dis N Dat

In a Pigs Eye are featuring Matt McKay

Howling Wolf has John Waterman

Sunday, September 23

LOOKOUT!!!! Barrence Whitfield and the Savages are playing the patio at the Black Lobster. Website says 12:30AM but you know that’s not right. I’m guessing PM. I hope this is correct cus I sent a bunch of peeps there a few weeks ago to see/hear “Bucket” and they weren’t playing. Seems the band knew nothing about it. OOPS!!!!!! If this is correct, I’m calling this my Pick of the Weekend!  I’m working till sunset today and will miss this AGAIN. BOOOOO!!!!

Sunday/Funday is the weekly jam at Seaport Café, starting around 4:00. Not sure who this weeks special guest is but this is always an unbelievable show. As always, my Pick of the  Afternoon.

O’Neill’s has their weekly Irish Session starting around 4 today. Bring the kids. It’s that kind of show.

The Lobster Shanty has Clay Ventre and the Bond Girls this afternoon at 3.

Steve Spungin is the featured artist at Howling Wolf tonight.

Zeke Martin is at In a Pig’s Eye tonight. Always a great way to finish off the weekend

Monday, September 24

Dave Bailin hosts the weekly open mic tonight at In a Pigs Eye.

Wednesday, September 26

Seaport Café is featuring Jazz every Wednesday with Zach Bridges and friends. I have failed to report this before but it’s a great show. And it’s Wednesday, the start of the weekend, already.

Shows you may have missed last week

Dave Bailin and the Bailouts tore up Derby Street from Seaport Café  last Thursday.

I had dinner with Pam and friends Friday, at The Lobster Shanty. The house band Vein were fab, per usual. And our lovely sky diving waitress Krissy kept the food and soda’s coming as rin stellar fashion. If you see Krissy this week, wish her a Happy Birthday.

I was traveling with people who wanted to dance Friday, so we stopped in on The Transistors at Seaport. Talk about fun dance music. Lead guitarist Silvertone Steve can be seen and heard NEXT week, when he’s with my new fave, Juke Joint Five at In a Pigs Eye Thursday, Sept 27. More on that next week

This list was put together with much help from STANSLIST.COM. Thanks Stan.

Please excuse any incorrect spelling and omissions.

Go out and listen to some great LIVE music in the wonderful, strange, hip town of Salem.

And tip your bartenders and servers.

And always check with the venue as times and schedules change. (and I sometimes mess up)

Hope to see you out there!

Today’s picture is The Dejas, performing a few months back at Howling Wolf. Love those guys.
