Alex Diefenbach Named Youth Chess Champion

After a tournament lasting four hours, 9-year-old Alex Diefenbach was named the Salem Witch City Youth Chess Champion.

Alex was among seven total participants, and has been the champion twice before.

“He played at such an advanced level in 1st grade such that, out of 1,200 children to have taken my chess program, I have never seen such advanced play by anyone else prior," said Chess Tournament Director Steve Dibble. "Alex is good but he also really enjoys the game and shows friendly sportsmanship by not letting those he defeats feel bad.”

Other finishers included:

  • Second Place: Owen Labrie
  • Third Place: William Adisho
  • Fourth Place: Jake Fritz
  • A Tie for Fifth Place: Sam Werner and Samir Babic
