Where Are Salem's Most Ignored Stop Signs?

Stop signs are not optional, but they're sometimes treated as if they are.

There are hundreds of stop signs in Newport, but all too often, they are overlooked when drivers are in a rush.

We have all seen it and probably many would admit to a stop sign roll-through at one point in time.

Do you know of a location where a stop sign is frequently rolled through or ignored?

Why does the title of the story say Salem but the content says Newport? Anyway, at the end of Forrester Street where it meets Washington Square at the Common. People blow through those stop signs all the time.

The corner of Prince and Palmer in the Point. Ignored because it fell off and still hasn't been replaced.

The end of Orange Street. It comes out on Derby Street, just where it becomes a one way, so people blow through it all the time while quickly glancing only to their right. That might be fine if the only danger was hitting a car, but it's not. It's a dangerous spot for people walking and riding their bikes (travelling in either direction). I've been close to hit crossing that end of the street so many times while walking, and close to rear-ended when I'm driving and stop before the sidewalk (where the stop sign is, obviously) at the end of the street. It's ridiculous.

People cycling the wrong way on Derby St is an issue even if you stop at the stop signs, I've almost taken out a few cyclists that way. Some of the junctions (such as Turner/Derby) have such an obscured view both ways down Derby that even if you look left before pulling out you might not see an approaching cyclist.

The 4 way stop with Endicott and Winthrop Streets. I've seen so many people coming down Winthrop blow through that stop sign without even slowing down.

Stop sign at Federal and Beckford. People barely slow down, let alone stop.

Actually, there is NO "Stop" sign at the end of Orange Street, nor a stop line, yield sign, or any other marking. I always slow down & look both ways, but I'm not surprised you've almost been rear-ended if you're stopping where there isn't one.

Summer at Endicott as well. Even the fuzz blow that one! My buddy lived right on that corner and we use to sit on his stoop and make a drinking game out of it. Ahhh, to be young and dumb.

Stop signs at Grove & Tremont streets. Almost have gotten hit there from people blowing one of the three stop signs there.
Lisa Dolloff September 26, 2012 at 01:45 AM
Hmm, I never even noticed it was gone. I wonder when it disappeared. Regardless, it's common sense that when you're coming out of a side street onto a main street, you need to stop.

The four way stop at Grove /Harmony Grove/ Goodhue / Mason. It is a disaster.

four way stop at Grove st, Harmony Grove st and Mason st near the Moose hall. Then again at Tremont/School st. Actually I don't think Massachusetts drivers stop at any stop sign or lights even.
