Smoke or Fog? It was a Question on Monday

A meteorological phenomenon on Monday evening caused thick fog to sit along the water that looked very much like smoke to some people.

A fog bank that developed along the waterfront on Monday evening had some people wondering if it was smoke or clouds.

The clouds, or fog, was formed by slightly more humid air moving over cool waters, according to WHDH-TV channel 7 meteorologist Pete Bouchard. A sea breeze then draged it ashore, according to Bouchard.

Just up the North Shore in Manchester-by-the-Sea, someone called the Fire Department on Monday evening to report smoke near the harbor. It was, of course, determined to be clouds.

Also on the Salem Patch Facebook page, several readers posted photos of the fog and clouds as it moved in.
