Opus Now Open to the Public in Salem

Here are the five things you need to know before you start your day in Salem.

Today is Tuesday, July 16, and here are the five things you need to know: 

1. It will be another hot and humid day in Salem. The National Weather Service is predicting that local residents can expect it to be increasingly cloudy, with a high near 90. Tonight should be partly cloudy with a low near 68. (sunrise, 5:20 a.m.; low tide, 11:35 a.m.; high tide, 5:52 p.m.; sunset, 8:18 p.m.) 

2. Opus, Salem's new high-end restaurant on Washington Street, will officially open for business today. Click Here to take a virtual look around the bar and restaurant, located at 87 Washington St. 

3. The Salem Licensing Board will meet tonight at the City Hall Annex on Washington Street. The meeting, scheduled to begin at 6 p.m., is expected to feature a discussion regarding the opening of a Honey Dew Donuts on Canal Street.  

4. At their meeting Monday night, Salem School Committee members voted 4-3 in favor of ending the extended school year program at Saltonstall School. The meeting drew a crowd to the auditorium at Salem High School. 

5. Today in History: On July 16, 1790, The District of Columbia was established as the capital of the United States following the signing of the Residence Act.
