Want to Adopt a 'Royal' Kitten?

Here are the five things you need to know before you start your day in Salem.

Today is Tuesday, Aug. 13, and here are the five things you need to know

1. You'll want to be prepared for some wet weather today. The National Weather Service is predicting that local residents can expect showers, thunderstorms and a high near 76. Tonight should be rainy, with a low around 59. (sunrise, 5:48 a.m.; low tide, 10:16 a.m.; high tide, 4:31 p.m.; sunset, 7:47 p.m.)

2. Lady Lizzy, seen above, is just one of 19 kittens with royal names waiting to be adopted at Northeast Animal Shelter. To adopt, stop by the shelter at 347 Highland Ave., visit their website: www.neas.org or call 978-745-9888.

3. Just in case you missed it - we published a story Monday afternoon offering a look at recent progress at the future home of Salem's new Honey Dew Donuts on Canal Street. Click Here to look through our photo gallery.

4. Interested in the big expansion project at the Peabody Essex Museum? The Salem Redevelopment Authority will meet tomorrow night at the City Hall Annex on Washington Street to discuss the project. The meeting is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m., according to the posted agenda

5. Today in History: On Aug. 13, 1918, women were allowed to enlist in the United States Marine Corps for the first time. Opha Mae Johnson was the first woman to enlist.
