Salem Announces Hiring of First Latino Affairs Coordinator

Here are the five things you need to know before you start your day in Salem.

Today is Thursday, Sept. 19, and here are the five things you need to know:

1. It should be another beautiful day in Salem. The National Weather Service is predicting that local residents can expect it to be sunny, with a high near 71. Tonight should be clear, with a low around 57. (sunrise, 6:27 a.m.; high tide, 11:51 a.m.; low tide, 6:09 p.m.; sunset, 6:45 p.m.)

2. Mayor Kimberley Driscoll announced Wednesday that Salem resident Isabel Vargas will join her staff as the city’s first Latino Affairs Coordinator. The Latino Affairs Coordinator will provide Spanish-language constituent support, translation and interpretation services, and act as liaison to Latino business and community groups. Vargas will also help plan and execute broad-based civic engagement initiatives within Salem’s growing Latino community, including assisting with execution of the recently completed Point Visioning Plan.

3. Don't forget! Northeast Mosquito Control will be spraying for mosquitoes in South Salem tonight beginning at 7 p.m. Click Here for more information and to view a map of the planned spray area.

4. In case you didn't see it yesterday, Massachusetts Attorney General and gubernatorial hopeful Martha Coakley made a campaign stop at Front Street Coffeehouse in Salem Wednesday afternoon. Click Here to view video from her visit.

5. Today in History: On Sept. 19, 1995, The Washington Post and The New York Times published the Unabomber's manifesto.
