Peter D. Barter Flowers & Colonial Gifts Closes Its Doors

Here are the five things you need to know before you start your day in Salem.

Today is Wednesday, Sept. 25, and here are the five things you need to know

1. It should be another nice day in Salem. The National Weather Service is predicting that local residents can expect it to be mostly sunny, with a high near 66. Tonight should be partly cloudy, with a low around 48. (sunrise, 6:34 a.m.; low tide, 9:50 a.m.; high tide, 4:06 p.m.; sunset, 6:35 p.m.)

2. After more than 30 years in business on Pickering Wharf, Peter D. Barter Flowers & Colonial Gifts on Derby Street in Salem has closed its doors. Our Associate Regional Editor Chris Helms snapped a picture of a sign that was posted outside of the business Tuesday afternoon that reads "Thank you Salem and all of our wonderful friends and customers."

3. Salem's Design Review Board will meet tonight at the City Hall Annex on Washington Street. The meeting, scheduled to begin at 6 p.m., is expected to feature a schematic review of a proposed $45 million development on Dodge Street, according to the posted agenda

4. Just in case you missed it - we published these photos of recent progress at Bertram Field Tuesday afternoon. Salem High School's Athletic Director recently told Salem Patch that the project is right on schedule.

5. Today in History: On Sept. 25, 1992, NASA launched the Mars Observer, a $511 million Mars probe.
