Salem City Council to Consider Medical Marijuana Zoning Tonight

Here are the five things you need to know before you start your day in Salem.


Today is Thursday, Oct. 10, and here are the five things you need to know: 

1. It should be another pleasant day in Salem. The National Weather Service is predicting that local residents can expect it to be partly sunny, with a high near 61. Tonight should be mostly cloudy, with a low around 48. (sunrise, 6:51 a.m.; low tide, 9:34 a.m.; high tide, 3:48 p.m.; sunset, 6:09 p.m.) 

2. The Salem City Council will meet tonight at City Hall on Washington Street. The meeting, scheduled to begin at 7 p.m., is expected to feature a vote that may determined whether Salem is the recipient of one of Essex county's five medical marijuana dispensary licenses, according to the posted agenda

3. Worried about the air quality in Salem? There will be a public hearing about air quality permitting relating to the city's new power plant tonight at Bentley School on Memorial Drive. The hearing is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.

5. Today in History: On Oct. 10, 1780, The Great Hurricane of 1780 killed between 20,000 and 30,000 people in the Caribbean.
