City of Salem Issues Notice Following 'Brown Water' Reports

Here are the five things you need to know before you start your day in Salem.

Today is Thursday, Nov. 14, and here are the five things you need to know

1. It should be another nice day in Salem. The National Weather Service is predicting that local residents can expect it to be sunny, with a high near 49. Tonight should be mostly clear, with a low around 36. (sunrise, 6:33 a.m.; high tide, 8:36 a.m.; low tide, 3:02 p.m.; sunset, 4:21 p.m.)

2. The city of Salem announced Wednesday that local officials have received several reports of “brown” or discolored water from city residents. The Salem/Beverly Water Board has determined that there is a high level of manganese in the water being treated. The water is safe to drink, but discolored. City residents should have clear water by today, according to the announcement. If you are still experiencing brown or discolored water by the end of this week, please contact the Salem Beverly Water Supply Board at (978) 922-2600.

3. The Salem City Council will meet tonight at City Hall on Washington Street. The meeting, scheduled to begin at 7 p.m., is expected to feature a discussion regarding the installation of a new memorial bench at Salem Common, according to the posted agenda.

4. The 2013 Salem Winter Market will be held this afternoon at Old Town Hall in Salem. The market will run from 3 to 6 p.m. and will feature produce from local farms, pasture-fed meat, spices, pickles, soup, baked goods, artisan soap, jewelry, wreaths, and more.

5. Today in History: On Nov. 14, 1979, US President Jimmy Carter issued an executive order freezing all Iranian assets in the United States in response to the hostage crisis.
