Here are the five things you need to know before you start your day in Salem.


Today is Tuesday, Jan. 7, and here are the five things you need to know: 

1. It will feel noticeably colder out there in Salem today. The National Weather Service is predicting that local residents can expect it to be sunny, with a high near 14. Tonight should be blustery, with a low around 9. (sunrise, 7:13 a.m.; low tide, 9:39 a.m.; high tide, 3:57 p.m.; sunset, 4:26 p.m.)

2. Salem's Essex National Heritage Commission recently announced a reception celebrating the Essex National Heritage Area 2013 Photo Contest winners. The reception will take place at the new gallery at Hunt's Photo & Video in Melrose on Thursday, Jan. 23. The image above is the 2013 Photo Contest Grand Prize: Rockport Dock, Rockport by Ken Jordan.

3. The Salem Recycling Committee will meet tonight at the City Hall Annex on Washington Street. The meeting is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m., according to the posted agenda

4. The City of Salem recently announced a Giveaway Contest in the hopes of encouraging city residents to sign up for E-Billing. Residents who pay at least one city bill before Jan. 31, 2014 will be entered to win a tablet. Click Here for all the details. 

5. Today in History: On Jan. 7, 1927, the first transatlantic telephone service was established. It ran from New York to London.
