Here are the five things you need to know before you start your day in Salem.

Today is Tuesday, Jan. 21, and here are the five things you need to know:

1. Now is the time to make final preparations for today's snowstorm. A winter snow warning goes into effect at 1 p.m. The National Weather Service is predicting that local residents can expect the snow to begin sometime after 3 p.m. The temperature will stay in the teens all day and 3 to 5 inches of new snow is expected to fall across the North Shore. (sunrise, 7:07 a.m.; low tide, 8:16 a.m.; high tide, 2:26 p.m.; sunset, 4:43 p.m.)

2. Thankfully, nobody was injured when an excavator tipped over at a Salem State University construction site Monday afternoon. Click Here for photos from the scene and our full story.

3. Salem Little League Registration will take place today from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Jackson Hewitt Office on Canal Street. Click Here for more information.

4. The Salem School Committee is scheduled to meet tonight at Collins Middle School on Highland Avenue. The meeting will begin at 7:30 p.m., according to the city's website. We'll let you know if it is canceled due to weather.

5. Today in History: On Jan. 21, 1954, the first nuclear-powered submarine was launched in Groton, Conn., by First Lady Mamie Eisenhower.
