Community Blood Drive Today at Temple Shalom

Here are the five things you need to know before you start your day in Salem.

Today is Thursday, Dec. 26, and here are the five things you need to know:

1. You'll want to be prepared for both snow and rain today. The National Weather Service is predicting that local residents can expect snow to switch over to rain after 3 p.m. The daily high temperature should be around 39. Tonight should be mostly cloudy, with a low around 26. (sunrise, 7:12 a.m.; low tide, 11:20 a.m.; sunset, 4:16 p.m.; high tide, 5:30 p.m.)

2. There will be an American Red Cross Blood Drive today from 1 to 6 p.m. at Temple Shalom on Lafayette Street. Residents are encouraged to make an appointment at 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or redcrossblood.org. Click Here for more information.

3. Don't forget! Salem residents recycle electronics for free on the last Saturday of each month.  So on Saturday you can drop off your items at the DPW, 5 Jefferson Ave., from 8 a.m. to noon. Click Here for more information.

4. We're on the look-out for a hand-knit shawl. A reader recently posted this message on our Facebook page: This shawl of mine was stolen from downtown Salem. It is hand-knit, and one of a kind. I designed it, and it's made from discontinued yarn. Please Help! Click Here for more information.

5. Today in History: On Dec. 26, 1998, Iraq announced its intention to fire upon US and British warplanes patrolling the northern and southern no-fly zones.
