Pelosi to Hit the North Shore With Tierney Today

Here are the five things you need to know before you start your day in Salem.


Today is Friday, Aug. 23, and here are the five things you need to know: 

1. You'll want to be prepared for some wet weather today.The National Weather Service is predicting that local residents can expect isolated thunderstorms after 2 p.m. Otherwise it will be sunny, with a high near 73. Tonight should be partly cloudy, with a low around 59. (sunrise, 5:59 a.m.; low tide, 7:14 a.m.; high tide, 1:32 p.m.; sunset, 7:32 p.m.)  

2. Former Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, will appear Friday in Beverly alongside U.S. Rep. John Tierney, D-Salem. Pelosi, the first female Speaker of the House who is now the House Democratic Party leader, will take part in a discussion titled “When Women Succeed, America Succeeds” at the Cummings Center.

3. Mosquito spraying for West Nile took place in south Salem on Wednesday night. Make sure you take a look at this handy list of precautions if you live in the area.  

4. In case you didn't hear - the city issued a press release Thursday afternoon announcing that portions of Canal Street will be closed to traffic beginning Aug. 28. Click Here for our full story and to view an interactive map showing live traffic on Canal Street.  

5. Today in History: On Aug. 23, 2011, a magnitude 5.8 earthquake occurred in Virginia, damaging monuments and structures in Washington D.C. and causing more than $200 million in damage.
