Free Scoops at Salem Screamery's Grand Opening Today

Here are the five things you need to know before you start your day in Salem.

Today is Thursday, Aug. 15, and here are the five things you need to know:

1. It should be another beautiful day in Salem. The National Weather Service is predicting that local residents can expect it to be sunny, with a high near 76. Tonight should be clear, with a low around 56. (sunrise, 5:50 a.m.; high tide, 6:01 a.m.; low tide, 12:05 p.m.; sunset, 7:44 p.m.)

2. The Salem Screamery, which recently opened on Washington Street, will host a grand opening celebration today beginning at 1 p.m. Area residents are invited to "have an ice cream on us, sample some treats, and enter our raffle," according to a recently posted event listing. The party is from 1-3 p.m. but people can get free samples all day long!

3. If you missed it Wednesday, Click Here to check out an article we published featuring a photo gallery of recent progress at the Salem MBTA station.

4. Salem's Board of Commissioners of Trust Funds will meet this evening in the mayor's office at City Hall on Washington Street. The meeting is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m., according to the posted agenda

5. Today in History: On Aug. 15, 1969, the Woodstock music festival began.
