Tisei Turns in Signatures

The congressional candidate will officially be on the ballot.

Congressional candidate Richard Tisei turned in his certified signatures to the Secretary of State's Elections Division in Boston Tuesday. Tisei was joined by a group of supporters who helped him gather the necessary signatures. Tisei, 49, announced his candidacy in November and has since outraised incumbent Congressman John Tierney in campaign donations two quarters in a row. Considered by many to be a formidable opponent for Salem resident Tierney, Tisei recently led Tierney by seven points -- with Tisei at 40 percent and Tierney at 33 percent -- in a GOP poll of district voters, Roll Call is reporting. Polls at this point in the race will likely shift repeatedly (a poll in late January had Tierney ahead by 15 votes, and both polls have …

Doggie Day Care Could Move to Mack Park Area

Zoning Board to hold a hearing Wednesday to consider proposal on special permit for Loyal Canines on Grove Street.

After running into stiff opposition from the neighbors on Franklin Street, the would-be landlord is proposing to move the doggie day center, operated by Jermaine Anderson's Loyal Canines, about a mile away to another property they own at 50 Grove St. That building, owned by Jay and William Goldberg, is near Mack Park and the new apartments that are under consideration for the site of the old Salem Oil & Grease factory. The Federated Companies, which may own the apartments once they are built, did not return calls about the doggie day care center. A public hearing is scheduled for Wednesday on the Goldbergs' request for a special permit under the city's zoning ordinance to allow what is described as “an obedience training and doggie daycare…

Here are scenes from the creation of Scharf's Salem mural on May 15.

Artist Kenny Scharf shared his creativity with Salemites on a wall outside the parking garage at New Liberty and Brown streets through rain and shine on Monday. Salem Patch was at the mural several times throughout the day — in the morning, afternoon and evening. Watch our video for scenes from throughout the day. Scharf will be completing the mural Tuesday morning as a result of some rain delays Monday. For more information on the project, click here.

A Voice In Salem

On Blue Shorts, Orange Envelopes and Parking Plans

Thoughts and comments on parking in downtown Salem from a former meter maid.

Three years ago I accepted a seasonal full-time position with the Salem Parking Department. Two summers and the better part of one winter were spent patrolling city streets enforcing the municipal parking code. The walking involved was tremendous in both volume and its effect on my body. On an average day I would walk 24,000 steps, which is about 12 miles. There were some days that I walked over 30,000 steps.  The tickets were there to write every day. Expired meters, crosswalks and corners were always calling for attention. It did not matter how fast or slow I walked, the tickets were there to be written.  Residential parking permits were a large part of my day, every day. Those who live in the resident parking areas are very vigilant …

Salem's Edward Carroll Joins Senate Race

Carroll joins Lovely, Manning and Slattery as democratic candidate vying for Berry's seat.

Democrats Joan Lovely, Mary-Ellen Manning and John Slattery will have some competition in the primary race as they vie for Fred Berry's 2nd Essex Senate seat. Edward Carroll, a 74-year-old Salem resident, retired sheriff's deputy and former Governor's Councillor has also joined the race, the Salem News reports. Current Governor's Councilor Manning is the only democratic candidate to have her signatures certified for the race thus far. Last week, Councilor-at-Large Joan B. Lovely reported she had filed over 1,500 signatures. Richard Jolitz of Beverly is the only Republican candidate. He has run against Berry before.

The groundbreaking ceremony was held at the Essex Aggie campus in Danvers.

State and town officials, school administrators, trustees and stakeholders joined to celebrate the groundbreaking of the new $133.7 million Essex North Shore Agricultural and Technical High School at the Essex Agricultural campus on Wednesday.  Described as a "powerful champion" since the inception of the project, which dates back to the mid-1990's, Senate Majority Leader Fred Berry said waking up this morning he was "very, very happy." Berry was presented with a plaque of honor from current freshmen at the North Shore Tech and Essex Agricultural School.  "I am tremendously grateful that with the guidance of the Mass. School Building Authority, the Patrick-Murray Administration saw a way to a better future for students on the North Shore…

City Backs Off Aggressive Ped Mall Upgrade Schedule

Phase One of the project will move forward at the end of June.

Renovations to the Pedestrian Mall will occur in phases, with the first phase slated to begin by the end of June. According to designer Tim Love of Utile, the design company that developed a strategic approach for the Essex Street Pilot Project, the first phase of the project will involve removal of the following — the planter behind the fountain located at the head of the mall at Townhouse Square; the kiosk and the round planter situated near Salem Five. During an April 11 meeting, the city expressed a desire to complete the entire project before the start of July. The Salem Redevelopment Authority unanimously voted to push the plans through for the first phase of the project immediately following a recommendation from the Design Review …

Will the Salem Ferry Run This Year?

City staff reviewing proposal for new ferry operator between Salem and Boston twice a day from Memorial Day to Halloween.

The Salem Ferry may be back ferrying commuters and visitors to and from Boston's Long Wharf by Memorial Day. Kathleen Winn, the deputy director of the city's Planning and Community Development Department, said the city staff is reviewing the options after it received a proposal from Boston Harbor Cruises to operate the city-owned boat. But Salem already has a ferry operator under contract. Boston's Best Cruises, the former operator, suspended running the ferry last fall because of high fuel costs and low ridership. Its web site still lists the Salem Ferry as one of its routes. And it offers tickets at $19 for a round-trip ticket from Salem to Boston. But when one clicks on the date of the purchase, the site lists “no event.”   Allison …

What's the Deal with Splaine Park?

Design team is looking for opinions on the new May Street entrance and the tall wall by the CVS store.

The design team for a rejuvenated Splaine Park is looking for input from the residents of the Federal Street Neighborhood Association and other groups on how the main entrance to the park and a tall wall near the CVS store should look. The second of three public meetings on the design of the long-neglected park at the west end of the McIntire Historic District off Highland Avenue will be held at 6:30 p.m. tonight at the City Hall Annex, 120 Washington St., third floor. The city received a grant of $420,946 from the Commonwealth’s Division of Conservation Services to renovate the almost two-acre park, near the corner of Boston and Essex Streets. The proposed improvements include better park entrances, rehabilitation of the baseball field, …

Gridlock at the North Street Gas Station – Again

City Council to hold hearing on plan to plant trees as three-year-old war re-escalates.

After an unusually warm winter had allowed work to proceed, the neighbors near the long-vacant North Street gas station and convenience store were cautiously optimistic that the owner would finish the work at the site, including planting trees between the station and their properties. Planting the tree was one of the last steps to end a three-year fight between the neighbors on Buffum Street and station owner, Haralampos Sidiropoulos of Trickett Realty Trust. The trees were also necessary for the neighbors to drop their opposition to the city granting Sidiropoulos a certificate to operate the station. But then the deal fell apart. The owner's landscape architect, Lorayne Black of Groton, submitted to the city solicitor Elizabeth Rennard a …
