The congressional candidate will officially be on the ballot.
Congressional candidate Richard Tisei turned in his certified signatures to the Secretary of State's Elections Division in Boston Tuesday. Tisei was joined by a group of supporters who helped him gather the necessary signatures. Tisei, 49, announced his candidacy in November and has since outraised incumbent Congressman John Tierney in campaign donations two quarters in a row. Considered by many to be a formidable opponent for Salem resident Tierney, Tisei recently led Tierney by seven points -- with Tisei at 40 percent and Tierney at 33 percent -- in a GOP poll of district voters, Roll Call is reporting. Polls at this point in the race will likely shift repeatedly (a poll in late January had Tierney ahead by 15 votes, and both polls have …

Lovely says a growing number of citizens have lost faith in elected officials in large part because of the influence of money in politics.
Salem city councilor Joan Lovely is looking to set a tone for the state Senate race, one which clearly distances itself from any outside purse strings and influence. She says it's an effort to address a climate of distrust for elected officials by the public. “We live in a time when a growing number of citizens have lost faith in their elected officials in large part because of the influence of money in politics. The public perceives that their voices have been drowned out by special interests who can afford to give large contributions to candidates,” Lovely said Monday in a statement. “Contributions from special interests, rightly or wrongly, give the public the perception that the system favors special interests over the interests of …

Manning hopes to replace veteran state Sen. Fred Berry (D-Peabody), who is retiring this year. His district includes Beverly, Danvers, Peabody, Salem and Topsfield. Of Berry, Manning said: "No one can fill his shoes, I'll never challenge that." She did say, however, she would look forward to carrying forward initiatives that Berry believed in. State Senate candidate John Slattery of Peabody spoke to supporters Sunday afternoon at an informal gathering in Danvers.
John Slattery says the key to getting anything accomplished on Beacon Hill is building consensus and making important legislation "palatable" to fellow lawmakers. That's what Slattery, 53 and a candidate for state Senate in the 2nd Essex District, told a crowd of about 40 supporters in Danvers on Sunday. The informal afternoon meet and greet event was hosted by Democrat John Archer at his home. Slattery had just come off a meeting with the Danvers Democratic Town Committee the day before as he ramps up his campaign efforts. He's also back in the political scene after a 10-year hiatus. "I'm really excited about the campaign," Slattery said. "You can't do anything by yourself, no matter what anyone tells you," Slattery said. "That's what I …
