REVEALED: Which Salem Restaurant Served This Mac and Cheese?

Several readers guessed this week's restaurant correctly.

New Push For August Meals Tax Holiday

The state's Restaurant and Business Alliance said there was "no sign of opposition" at a hearing this week.

The Joint Committee on Revenue in the Massachusetts legislature held a hearing last week on the notion of a potential meals tax holiday for August and one supporting group liking its chances. According to the state's Restaurant and Business Alliance (R.A.B.A), the hearing held Tuesday for the Meals Tax Holiday Bill saw "no sign of opposition" to the measure. Twelve legislators have signed on to the bill primarily sponsored by Rep. Keiko Orrall of Lakeville and Sen. Michael O. Moore of Millbury. If passed, the legislation would go into effect from Sunday, Aug. 11 through Thursday, Aug. 15. "We should offer a Meals Tax Holiday to benefit employees and small local business owners inside Massachusetts to help stimulate the economy," said Dave …

Hey everyone, this is indeed the Shanty's mac and cheese (and Dorothy you're right, this is the lobster version.) And thanks for the feedback on Salem Patch itself. We always appreciate it, even when it's of the sharp-elbowed variety.   more ›

Your Next Car: What's It Going to Be?

I'm hoping to drive my old beater into the ground before we need to get another car, but I'm on the lookout. What's your next car going to be?

My wife and I drive a perfectly good 2002 Nissan Sentra with 127,318 miles on it. "Stella" has four wheels and gets us from Point A to Point B. We've reached the stage in the life of the car where we don't repair body damage (as you can tell from the accompanying photo). I'm ashamed for my Dad to see it. But hey, it's paid for. Even though I'd love to get 200K miles out of Stella, she has some mechanical problems, like a seized bolt that has left the transmission fluid unchangeable for about eight years. She could conk out any old day. So we've been on the lookout for our next car. I'm paying attention to car commercials, asking friends about their cars. You know the feeling. Abutters Withdraw Gas Station Appeal

The Salem News is reporting that a legal battle over a gas station on North Street is over.

An appeal filed by the abutters of a North Street gas station was withdrawn Wednesday night, ending a legal battle that dates back more than four years ago. A lawyer representing the abutters informed the Salem Zoning Board of Appeals Wednesday night that they were dropping their appeal, according to The Salem News. The appeal was reportedly filed by Buffum Street residents Helen and George Papadopoulos in 2008 after the prospective owner of the gas station felled a series of oak and maple trees that separated their home from the property. The Salem News is reporting that the Papadopouloses officially withdrew an appeal of an occupancy permit issued by the city Building Inspector in February.

I can take an educated guess. If you take legal action against the city you are paying for both side. One to the attorney you hire and one to the city attorney through your taxes.   more ›
