Play developer, and tell us what should go in this Highland Avenue spot.
Healthworks Fitness Center's location on Highland Avenue closed on April 30 after 33 years in business, leaving an empty commercial space. Some work has been done to the wiring in the ceiling, and there's been some work on the floors, but the space is currently empty, and there haven't been any public announcements that something else is moving in. All that's left from Healthworks is a sign announcing the closure, complete with a list of the company's other locations. Take a look at the photo attached to this article. If you had the resources and the authority to decide what would go at the old Healthworks location, what would you choose? Tell us in the comments. If you'd like us to get reader input on a certain vacant spot in the city, be…

Frozen yogurt shop was unanimously approved by the Licensing Board Monday.
Salem will be getting its very own Orange Leaf Frozen Yogurt at the corner of Lafayette and New Derby streets within the next three weeks. On Monday, owner David Pierre received unanimous support from the Licensing Board, which granted him a Common Victuallers License to operate from the Lafayette Street location, which was formerly the site of West Coast Video. When asked when he would open, Pierre told the board "we are shooting for approximately two weeks; it may be more like three. It depends on how everything goes with the contractors and everybody." The business, which offers frozen yogurt and a self-serve toppings bar, currently has a location in Andover. In addition to Salem, other Massachusetts locations slated to "open spoon" …

Zoning Board to hold a hearing Wednesday to consider proposal on special permit for Loyal Canines on Grove Street.
After running into stiff opposition from the neighbors on Franklin Street, the would-be landlord is proposing to move the doggie day center, operated by Jermaine Anderson's Loyal Canines, about a mile away to another property they own at 50 Grove St. That building, owned by Jay and William Goldberg, is near Mack Park and the new apartments that are under consideration for the site of the old Salem Oil & Grease factory. The Federated Companies, which may own the apartments once they are built, did not return calls about the doggie day care center. A public hearing is scheduled for Wednesday on the Goldbergs' request for a special permit under the city's zoning ordinance to allow what is described as “an obedience training and doggie daycare…

Kenny Scharf is coming to Salem — learn about his plans and help with the catering choices.
A wall outside Museum Place Mall is about to get a little color from world-renowned artist Kenny Scharf. The Brooklyn-based artist will be coming to Salem on May 14 to paint a permanent mural on the facade of the garage that's located approximately where Brown and New Liberty Streets meet, at the entrance to the garage. Mike Lash, who heads Mike's Museum (Mike is currently looking for a space to house the museum after vacating the spot on Lafayette Street), said he contacted Scharf on Facebook and he was pleasantly surprised when Scharf wrote back. Lash said Scharf was up to the challenge of coming to Salem. "He said 'sure, let's look for a public area, a permanent site,'" Lash explained. Last year, Lash said the city was very helpful in …
Phase One of the project will move forward at the end of June.
Renovations to the Pedestrian Mall will occur in phases, with the first phase slated to begin by the end of June. According to designer Tim Love of Utile, the design company that developed a strategic approach for the Essex Street Pilot Project, the first phase of the project will involve removal of the following — the planter behind the fountain located at the head of the mall at Townhouse Square; the kiosk and the round planter situated near Salem Five. During an April 11 meeting, the city expressed a desire to complete the entire project before the start of July. The Salem Redevelopment Authority unanimously voted to push the plans through for the first phase of the project immediately following a recommendation from the Design Review …

City staff reviewing proposal for new ferry operator between Salem and Boston twice a day from Memorial Day to Halloween.
The Salem Ferry may be back ferrying commuters and visitors to and from Boston's Long Wharf by Memorial Day. Kathleen Winn, the deputy director of the city's Planning and Community Development Department, said the city staff is reviewing the options after it received a proposal from Boston Harbor Cruises to operate the city-owned boat. But Salem already has a ferry operator under contract. Boston's Best Cruises, the former operator, suspended running the ferry last fall because of high fuel costs and low ridership. Its web site still lists the Salem Ferry as one of its routes. And it offers tickets at $19 for a round-trip ticket from Salem to Boston. But when one clicks on the date of the purchase, the site lists “no event.” Allison …
