Today is the anniversary of the Armory and Masonic Temple fires in 1982.
The Salem News published a history of the incident.

Salem is a faithful town with deep roots capable of handling tough times and helping surrounding towns.
This was a very uncertain time as a Salem resident and a 7th grader. Especially in the wake of the fire at our beloved Saint Anne's Church several weeks before the armory fire. One thing is certain, our Salem firefighters and police officers did a stellar job during this time and still to this day!
RIP Firefight McSwiggin you Salem family will always remember you and your family.
