What's That New Medal at Salem City Hall?
This week's You Ask...Patch Answers column is focused a new addition to Salem City Hall.
Every week, we set out to answer a question submitted by one of our readers as part of our You Ask...Patch Answers column.
On Thursday, we received an email from a local resident who was curious about a new medal that has been prominently displayed within City Council Chambers at City Hall.
They asked: I noticed while watching a video you posted of the three Salem firefighters being recognized for their heroism that there is some kind of new medal there in the third-floor meeting room at City Hall. Can you tell me more about it? Thanks!

The new medal, which can be seen in the photo above, was awarded to the City of Salem during a celebratory ceremony last month. It recognizes the city's recent designation by President Obama as being The Birthplace of the American National Guard.
The medal features an image of a soldier armed with a musket and an inscription reading: First Muster, 13 Dec. 1636, Second Corps Cadets Veterans Association.
At the last meeting of the Salem City Council, council president Jerry Ryan took a moment to applaud the city's designation and to point out the new medal.
