What is Project K-9?

We've had questions about community efforts to bring a K-9 unit to the Salem Police Department; find out what's going on here.

Salem residents are working together to bring two K-9s to the by October.

The , Mack Park Neighborhood Association and Lions Club are spearheading the effort to raise sufficient funds for the unit.

In a letter to City Councilors, Ward 6 Councilor Paul Prevey, who is working as treasurer in the fundraising effort, said "the goal is to raise $30,000 for two dogs, the equipment and training for the dogs and the officers assigned to the unit."

Without the fundraising efforts of the community, Prevey indicated it wouldn't be possible to fund the unit through the city's budgetary process.

The goal date of October has been set so that the Salem Police Department and the new unit can be trained through the Boston Police Department's training program, which only occurs once per year.
