What Do You Envision for Canal Street?

A hearing is scheduled for this evening — what issues are at the top of your list?

Canal Street — we've heard lots about it from many of you concerned about the state of this road.

Tonight, there will be a hearing on state improvements to the roadway at the Enterprise Center, according to the Salem News.

On the eve of improvements, we want to know — What do you envision for Canal Street?

What would you like to see on the street?

What improvements top your list?

A smooth and level road would be a start...
The city needs to hold the contractor who put in the sewer line responsible for the settling of the road.

I'd love for them to continue the bike path that is supposed to parallel Canal Street into downtown.

How about turning it into an actual canal - like Venice. It would be spectacular

Fix the issues with cars pulling into bagel World. It's a DEATH trap. Work with the booming business and an engineer to better set up the drive-through.

Would reversing the direction of the drive thru work better, because then the line of cars waiting could be accommodated in Bagel World's parking lot with a dedicated lane. This would cost nothing and take a dangerous and frustrating situation from Canal Street

I'd like to be able to walk down it without having lifts on only one of my feet.

I drive with trepidation along the area by the gas station hoping an overloaded tanker doesn't keel over there! And agree so much with the poster above regarding Bagel World. The entire road's a rutted mess from one end to the other, that turning into a Canal really sounds nicer!

Flat and level roadway and sufficient drainage so that the street does not flood.

More crosswalks and lights for the crosswalks. I don't know how many times I've almost been hit while crossing because people don't slow down. Also, street lights. Walking back to SSU from downtown is frightening unless it's the middle of the day and many students work downtown. There's always drunk people there, and only street lights on one side of the street in some parts.

Please try and come to tonight's meeting if you're interested. There will be a bike path as part of the project, we should be able to get it extended all the way to town but there are still a few rights issues to be settled. There will be more good crosswalks, I don't know about signals. Drainage will be significantly improved. Some of the parking/drive-thru issues should also be addressed because the job is to Federal standards for roadways, not local.

CANAL why do you think it is called canal st .Look for lot of trouble draining this area .It was a issue in the past ,and if you buy into global warming it will soon be a bigger problem . Ever notice how often Lower Bridge st floods now.
No talk of developing housing in this area yet .Wonder why?
