Mayor Applauds Salem's New Downtown Turbines [VIDEO]
The city's new wind turbines are harnessing both solar and wind power to support a free Wi-Fi network, a new community message board and surveillance cameras.
The state-of-the-art wind turbines now spinning atop the South Harbor Garage have city residents gazing upward in amazement and Mayor Kimberley Driscoll applauding another green energy project.
The combination solar and wind turbines were officially unveiled Monday morning during a press conference at the Salem Waterfront Hotel that was aimed at better-explaining exactly how they work and what will harness the power they generate.
Speaking at the event were Driscoll, Wing Power Energy CEO Harry Ruda and Verizon Wireless' Associate Director of Innovation Centers, Gagan Puranik - all of whom worked together to see the project through.
"This is a wonderful opportunity to demonstrate the green community that we know Salem is and certainly the one that it wants to be," Driscoll said.
In addition to providing free Wi-Fi, several new surveillance cameras, and a 24/7 street-level community message board, Driscoll said the turbines, which aren't taking up any parking spaces, send the right message to city residents.
"I think symbolically they send the right message about what our hopes are for the future in terms of how we collect energy and how we use it," Driscoll said.
Puranik stressed that unlike the larger offshore wind turbines, these spin vertically, are completely silent and have been specifically designed to blend into an urban environment.
Although the turbines are currently unprotected from vehicles navigating the roof of the Congress Street parking lot, Puranik said the plan is to install protective bollards around them in the near future.
Have you seen the new turbines while driving downtown? What do you think of them? Let us know in the comments section below.

I've been looking at these before they were operational, and thought they were cell phone related with those big VERIZON logos stamped on the side. Anyway, good job Salem. A step in the right direction.

Thank you Agenda 21!"Sustainable development" is a good idea, but not when it comes from a global model that does not care about the unique qualities of a city like Salem or any other city.
Salem residents, not the UN, should decide city planning and management.
Please learn about this insidious Orwellian plan by going to the UN website and looking up "Agenda 21" or consult other sources for information.

Salem is 1 of 24 Mass. communities called "Gateway Cities" under Agenda 21. These communities are slated to house 390,000 people in "stack and pack" shoe box apartments, all Agenda 21.
Residents are told, "oh, of course residents will have input on these decisions", but that is a lie because the money is already allocated, the plan already in place and the conclusions already drawn. Often even local mayors or city councils don't understand what Agenda 21 is or it's impact on our lives.
Please look at this because it will effect everyone, especially property owners.

Public input to the Bridge st project has slowed or stopped the Gateway nonsense .Ward two got involved .
As for these "egg beaters" They don't bother me {NOTE I am totally against Industrial wind power } They are just too insignificant .Only problem I see is ,where are the plowing the snow around them ?

What is the cost to the city, what are the annual operating costs, and what are the savings? If there isn't a cost benefit to the taxpayers then this administration just wasted more money, despite the feel good moment.

"several new surveillance cameras," ...is it 1984 already?
Windpower, there are many parts to Agenda 21 and until it is defeated init's entirety, no one is safe.It is in every local city or town and people must become aware and learn what it is.

""several new surveillance cameras," ...is it 1984 already?"
Dude, these surveillance cameras are a WELCOME addition to this garage. 3yrs ago my car was parked on top of that roof overnight, right where the new turbines are. Next day I returned to find my driver's side window smashed, glass EVERYWHERE in the interior, and an empty fifth of vodka laying on passenger seat (the projectile). I also was on my way to the airport to catch a flight when I found the mess, so it was super convenient. Many, many other people have also had their windows smashed, cars vandalized, or cars broken into in that garage. It's way overdue, but the City has done a GREAT job installing these cameras.
John, why don't you go back to World Net Daily, I hear they have a good conspiracy theory going on there about Obama being secretly gay, having been secretly married in college (to a gay guy), and - hold it - having also secretly killed this secret gay husband. Oh yeah, their rattling on about the UN too. Should be a treat for you, also bonus, Rick Santorum is a new columnist there. Enjoy!

I knew Obama was gay! Kidding, kidding, relax
I never worry about so called government or UN conspiracies b/c the people who work in those institutions have the motivation of a gnat and are generally incompetent. What looks like an evil plot is usually just a nice mix of dumb and lazy i.e. latest green line crash, state crime lab, crumbling big dig, no oversight of pharmacies..we can go on and on. What has the UN ever accomplished other than getting out of parking tickets in NY?

Rachel Maddow,...she is funny.
I've tried to inform people with regard to Agenda 21, but rather than do their own research, I got ridicule, talk of "conspiracy", I gave a link which showed who is funding it and how it gets to your local city council. This is a complicated issue and it was done that way on purpose. Clearly, this all crazy talk, so pay no attention.
Let's talk about something meaningful,...Hey, what should Kate name her baby?

Bill. Because I have studied this, I know of the dangers, but I presented the info and people can draw their own conclusions, but ask yourself, if there is no threat why did Carver, Mass. kick them out as well as the state of Alabama, in addition to many other communities once they learned all of the facts?

Right, so a nonbinding U.N. resolution aimed at making human life sustainable on this earth is a bad thing...
Land use is a serious issue. So is resource allocation. Agenda 21 is the first good faith effort to look at these issues in a light that cares more about sustaining life on earth for future generations than any other purpose.
Is it a perfect resolution? No. Neither were the Articles of Confederation, but we got another shot at that didn't we? Anyone remember the League of Nations? Often times the first attempt at a lofty goal is imperfect. However please do not confuse the goal of Agenda 21 with something as irrelevant to the global community as limiting property rights. It is about making a planet that was not made to house 7 billion humans more efficient at doing just that for as long as possible. The End.

There's a completely off-the-grid free Wifi network in the area immediately surrounding the garage named City of Salem. It reaches into several surrounding businesses.

Andy, you clearly are in sync with George Bush sr., who adopted Agenda 21 in 1992 right up to Obama. You are both naive and ill informed as to what Agenda 21 is,...or maybe you're not, which makes you a globalist eugenicist control freak who believes a one size fits all global UN model is good and that citizens are not capable of managing city planning or resources taking into account the unique qualities of say, a city like Salem, that those decisions should be left to faceless, nameless bureaucrats because they have our best interest at heart,...is that right?

John, if you look at Agenda 21 with your Absolute Worst Case Scenario Goggles (TM) on, then I'm sure you can see it as being a manipulative, controlling commandment that steals the control of city planning and resources from the hands of citizens and forcibly inserts change.
If you look at it rationally and with the presence of mind to view it the way it is being carried out, then you will see that it is a potentially useful nonbinding resolution that sets goals and guidelines. Calling it "Orwellian" stinks of misplaced paranoia.
Calling Agenda 21 "insidious" is hyperbole and delusion. Citizens and city government cheering the installation of renewable energy is sensible.

Free wifi for businesses in the area from the city? Wheres my free wifi. How about trying to light street lights instead of giving the benifit away to a select group. I wonder if the hotel gets the free wifi?
Andy

the city doesn't pay for that wi-fi, Verizon does it as a free network for the city, in exchange for the advertising these turbines help provide in a high traffic area. The hotel has its own wireless network, completely separate from this one.

To those reasonable people,I urge you to look at Agenda 21. There are some good YouTube videos or go find it on the UN website.
Don't take my word please check it out yourself.
There is a growing grass roots movement against Agenda 21 and the state of Alabama banned it along with communities from California to Mass.
Look at it and you will know why.
